Sei gave a small nod, disappointed in his dead end n the actual ownership of the dog. He just hoped the child didn't have that much damage, after all, it had only been a misunderstanding, one that Sei was still chastising himself over. Honestly, he needed to learn to think and take his time when it came to fights.
He quietly raised an eyebrow, noting how the girl seemed to recognize the dog. Apparently it seemed that she did in fact know the dog, and perhaps was the owner after all. That was somewhat of a relief to the demon slayer, not that it gave him much of a clue on what to do. He just had to wait for the moment, quietly shuffling his feet and glancing at the dog. "Kahen, unusual name," Sei simply said quietly.

Sei's comment drew everyone's attention to him. The girl shrieked and jumped up after a lingering silence. She brandished an admonishing finger at him in a dramatically pointed fashion. "MONSTER! You attacked me," she exclaimed loudly, making the old man, his wife, and the dog jump. The latter started barking loudly, thinking that something exciting was going on.

My most sincere and honest apologies Ki for this horridly late post.
Sei flwinched. That's right, he flwinched; a rare moment when a flinch and a wince are fused together in a single split-second perfectly, causing the face to look like both expressions at once. To anyone looking at him, it would seem like he had just been hit in the face with a fist that was composed of the smell of rotten fish. Two weeks old rotten fish. "Sorry for the attack, I thought you were the graverobber," Sei admitted, wincing now and flinching right afterwards. He paused for a moment, eyes narrowing a little; sure, he was ashamed for hitting a little girl, but there was still her purpose in being there. "Can you blame me, when you jump up out of the ground as if you were waiting for me to leave to escape?"

"I was hiding from you," the girl exclaimed loudly and dramatically. A trickle of blood oozed from her nose and the dog at her feet whined. "I thought you were a monster." She sniffled. "And I was right!" The old couples' eyes flitted from the girl to Sei as they talked, like they were watching a tennis match. Then the girl burst into a tsunami of tears. "I just want to find Okasan!"

Sei briefly frowned, not in anger but in sadness at the sight of the small trickle of blood coming from the girl's nose. He knew he didn't have any tissues, but he did have at least, part of his ruined cloak which he lightly tore off and quietly held it out to her. "For your nose child, and I apologize for any harm that has befallen you because of my mistake," He stated quietly, calmly. Though, she was hiding from him? That seemed odd, could she have been watching him from her hiding spot? Or had she slipped into the dirt somehow when she heard him approach? Hard to say really, without asking.
"And where is your okasan little one?" Sei softly asked, concern showing in his voice. Maybe, maybe she had come to try and find her mother's grave? That was a disturbing thought, and a chilling one at that.

The girl blew her nose obnoxiously loud on the offered garment and eye Sei blearily. She looked tired now, all her energy gone before her gaze turned heavily to the window behind him. "Out there," she said, her voice monotone. The dog whimpered again and the old lady came to the girl's side to stroke her hair. "You poor thing!"

Sei quietly winced, and frown sadly. He was right; and he hated that fact, though at least now if she was in fact the graverobber in the loosest sense of the term, he could see why she did it. Probably trying to find her mother perhaps, no, assuredly that was the case. It was rather depressing to think about it, that she didn't know where her mother was buried. At least, that's what he thought was the case.
"I am sorry for bringing it up little one," he paused and tried to think of the best way to word this. He did not want to badger her with questions, even though he needed answers.

If Sei was going to get answers, he would have to do it fast. The girl's eyes were beginning to droop under the comfort of the caretaker's wife. It had been a long and painful night for her. Essentially, she had been buried alive. Not to mention the explosion which had occurred directly in her face. Oh yeah, and her mother was dead. So it was only natural that she was being pulled into the land of unconsciousness.

Sei quietly crouched down so he was near the young child's face. "How did you get down there? And how long have you been looking?" This might prove to be the break through that he needed to bring this job to a close, however, not entirely. Part of him, the part that had grown up in the monastery, did not like the idea of leaving this child without the knowledge of her mother's grave.
If he could, Sei would spend the entire night if he had to, just to find the young mother's grave. He refused to think about the girl having to look for her alone in the dark, and worse, what if next time she bumped into a hollow and not him?

The mingled smell of dirt and blood would greet Sei's nose as he crouched near the child, but there was something more than that. Only one with a good sense of smell and the knowledge of such would be able to place it as what it truly was; decay. The girl's breathing was still ragged and for a moment, it seemed like she wouldn't or couldn't respond, and she didn't, at least not verbally. However, she did lift slender young hands upward, showing the chipped and cracked nails lined with dirt and traces of dried blood indicating the how part of Sei's question. As for time, the girl offered him a shrug. What was time to someone like her?

Sei sadly, did not have such a great sense of smell. He did however, notice her chipped and cracked nails, quietly studying them gently reaching out to softly touch her fingernails before frowning. She needed to have her fingers bandaged, and sadly there was no answer which meant he would have to find out the hard way. She had obviously dug her way down, though still, how long had she been waiting. A better question yet, as he glanced at the dog, why was the dog following her.
"I have just one last question; have you seen anyone disturbing the graves? Someone else?" He asked, for at this point, he had little choice but to finish up his questions with the little girl, and then move onto asking the couple about her in private.

The girl slowly shook her head in reply to Sei's question before yawning long and loud. The woman blustered about and made her lay back down. "You need your rest, dearie. It's been a long night. When you wake up in the morning, I'll have a nice big breakfast cooked for you and the dog!" That was that, really, so the old man picked up on the cue to wander back to the other end of the small cott and stare out the window there. The wind outside howled around the house as it struck its chords across the bare branches of the graveyard's trees.

Sei sighed, seeing as he wasn't getting anywhere right now sadly. There wasn't much he could do but stand up and back up away from the young girl. Just what in the Buddha's name was he missing? He knew that he had to have all the clues and information at his fingertips right now, if he could only put them together correctly, somehow. Perhaps the old man could help him with this little predicament, perhaps some background information on the young girl as he quietly followed him
"Excuse me sir,"

The man pulled his eyes away from the window and they focused on Sei. The blue depths of his irises seemed cloudy, but not with age. "What is it, son," he asked kindly, despite the unpleasant circumstances surrounding the evening. A pipe had made its way to his hands and he started to pack it with tobacco as he waited for the monk's reply.

Sei didn't register the cloudy nature of the man's eyes for the moment, though he did glance back at the young girl and the caretaker's wife. "What can you tell me about the child? She sounds like she's from the village," Sei asked, wondering if he was missing something. There just didn't seem to be enough information, and he still only had one real suspect.

He puffed away on his pipe for a moment before he slow answered, "She's the daughter of a local fishmonger. His wife, her mother, died in a fire a year or so ago. The girl was rescued from the rubble. Everything but her face was badly burned. Somehow she lived, but she's been less than stable since." He looked over at the girl who was now fast asleep on the cot. Her clothing covered everything but her face so evidence of burns was nowhere to be seen, though her face was swollen from the hit she had suffered at Sei's hands. "She's had a hard life, that one."

Sei was positive that the great Buddha was punishing him now for striking a child, twice now, and that a third blow was coming soon. He was sure of it as he listened to the old man, doing his best to not flinch which failed miserably at the mention of just how much the little girl had suffered. It was true, Buddha was punishing him spiritually for that enormous mistake. "What do you mean by unstable?" He whispered, curious about what the man meant. If he mentioned that she saw spirits, then he had a damn good idea what was really going on with the child. If not, then he was sure the third blow had hit him from the Buddha.

The old man's bushy gray eyebrow rose over his left eye as he puffed away on his pipe again. It seemed to be an expression of mild surprise at Sei's question. When it lowered, he said, "You found her hiding in a grave, did you not? It's certainly not stable behavior. There are other small things like mood swings. The doctor who patched her up said it's to be expected given her circumstances." He gestured over to the large dog laying on the floor below the girl. Its eyes were closed but its ears were active as it guarded the girl. "She's been a bit better since that dog came back. It had disappeared after the fire. People thought it had gotten burned up too."

Sei gave a small nod, pausing for a moment to then glance at the dog itself and raised an eyebrow, trying to figure out what he was possibly missing. There was something right under his nose but just what was it? [99FFFF]"Mood swings you say? For a child so young, that seems a little unusual...."[/color] He really wished Buddha would give him a sign, something to tell him that he needed to take a second look. "How old was the dog at the time if I may ask?"

The old man shrugged at Sei's question before inhaling another wonderful smoke filled puff of air. "Can't say really. I already told you that the dogs were given out a couple years back. Maybe a year then, maybe not. What does it matter anyways," he inquired, turning his gaze back to Sei, a bushy gray brow arched, making the wrinkles of his forehead deepen.

Sei sighed and rubbed his head, taking a moment to think about everything that happened. That was the one problem with working outside of his usual area of expertise; being a demon slayer was simple, being an investigator was something else entirely. Right now, the main problem was that he was still lacking a suspect in a sense. The girl seemed to be the one who was probably digging up the grave, at least, that's how it seemed to him.
If only everything was clearer than maybe he could get somewhere. Then again, perhaps he was just thinking about this too much. "Just trying to figure out what I am missing sir. As it is, the girl seems to be the only one near the graves recently. Beyond that, I could not find any clues as to anyone else being around," He whispered, sighing and shaking his head. "There is something missing here..."

"Hrmph," the old man grunted contemplatively before shrugging his shoulders slumped by the wear and tear of natural aging. "Well, I'm not one of those fancy scholars, so not sure what you're getting at." His wife rounded the corner and added, "Well, it does seem she's been searching for her mother's grave, plus nothing has been stolen, so perhaps it was just the girl?"

Sei paused to turn to the wife of the caretaker, wondering if she married him just because he was a simple man. Not that he was saying anything bad, it just popped into his mind for the moment. "I believe that is the case. I just wish to make sure I haven't overlooked something; it is disheartening that she has not found her mother's grave, and I can only assume that she is the one," Perhaps it was just his nerves or perhaps it was guilt, but Sei couldn't help but feel displeased with his findings.

The old couple stared at Sei as he thought to himself. There wasn't anything that they could really do. They had tended to the girl who was still passed out from the traumatic events, the dog was quiet, and the case was seemingly solved. Finally, the old man said, "I suppose I should pay you for your troubles so you can head off on your way."

Sei sighed and gave a small nod, at leas the mission was done. Still, he couldn't help but feel, hollow about it. "I would like to check back in after a week or two, to be sure. I only wish I could have been more help here." He said, not really thinking much about the money right now.

As the young man nodded his head, the old caretaker set about collection the money to pay him for his efforts. From within a drawer of a creaky table, he pulled out a small pouch. "Well, if we see anything unusual, we'll let you know, but it's best not to disturb the dead too much," the old man said, furrowing his thick brows as he handed Sei the pouch. "Thank you for your help," the old woman chimed in as she moved to open the door for Sei, a cordial smile on her plump features. Sei gave a nod and bowed his head, seeing that there was nothing more he could do there, except for of course, picking up his staff after he left. "Agreed, and you are both welcome, I hope I may see you again but under better circumstances." he replied, bowing reverently before smiling and thanking them for their hospitality and also for having the door opened for him.
Yet, in the back of his mind, he realized that he had to get stronger now and smarter. Sei had completed his mission, but also found himself realizing that there was still a monster out there that he needed to deal with. Kurobara no Majo, and worse, she was his mistress now. He may have done so out of survival, and humiliation, but Yagurashi Sei was not going to simply lay down like a dog. Right now he was ill prepared and incapable of doing anything to break free of the woman, and he had much to relearn about himself and to do. Namely, Sei needed to visit a monastery, and hopefully, regain his purpose, and also, one final task.
Find the resolve to kill; he had a dark feeling that it would be needed.
