A smile lent itself to his canvas, spreading her lips like gossamer wings. The glacial front melted. And yet, she was still everything but warm.
Kurisuna craned her neck at his consent, looking unto her scabbard as she shifted to remove the blade from its glossy carmine sheath. ''There is one remedy to what ails me,'' admitted the Captain, her sword emerging, outstretched, from the quick motion blur of the draw. She brought it before her just as swift, its lethal edge winking demurely, and slipped into a sure-footed stance. ''Temporary relief, at best, but if you manage to come out of this relatively unscathed, we'll both be winning.''
Granted, if he had demonstrated everything in his arsenal, this was tremendously unfair, but it would at least provide him with a thrilling experience of how it feels to be cut in fifty-seven different places and ditched in the middle of some peasant district.

Ryuu had caused her to smile. Undoubtedly this was because he was a bright ray of sunshin in the midst of this cloudy and stormy day. Afterall Ryuu prided himself on his ability to make others smile. Mostly by carving it onto their faces. But it was the thought that counted.
And then Kurisuna drew her own blade and told him that there was only one way for her to feel better. Of course Ryuu knew what this cure would be. Plus it also gave him more of an insight into her instability and how he could possibly use it to his advantage assuming he wasn't cut up into 57 different places and ditched in some peasant district (although Ryuu had heard that it was a thrilling experience). But what were the odds that Kurisuna would want to do that to him.
However Ryuu knew that if he faced off against her he wouldn't stand much of a chance given his current level of skill. So that meant that he would have to get her to either lose her desire to fight or make use of the terrain to even the odds.
"What is this remedy?" Ryuu asked with a curious and rather innocent look on his face. Hopefully the unexpected reaction would throw Kurisuna off a bit. Although if it didn't, Ryuu made sure to keep an eye on her along with any movements that she might make under the disguise of a kind smile.

''A spar,'' she told him restlessly, fingers yielding, curling, stiff and moist from the rain and the tightness of her grip. She adjusted it, and beckoned him to take a stance of his own; Kurisuna was not above squaring off with an adversary well below her level of skill (she did not intend to kill him, after all), but a warrior's tenets would not think it appropriate to assail the man as he stood, awkward and vulnerable. ''Nothing more, nothing less. You voiced a desire to continue; now, you'll take up arms, and face me.''
She had enough form to wait, of course, but lacked the charity to back down now that he'd solicited her help. Kurisuna had discerned this common theme with the students she'd challenged. Fear draped over them like a burial shroud, abject terror dulling their senses (facial skin tones more so) and, therefore, overall performance. Those too gutless to face her could not possibly thrive on the battlefield. They were better suited for the calm, academic lifestyle of her own division.
The irony was apparent to everyone but her.

AND HIS PLAN FAILED HORRIBLY. But at the very least calling it a spar made it sound less likely that he would be cut in 57 different places and then dumped into a peasant district (as thrilling as that did sound). It seemed that Ryuu had no choice but to face off against a foe who was much more experienced than him in the art of swordplay and who seemed to be bloodthirsty. What could possibly go wrong?
"Okay." Ryuu said as he shifted his body to the side, with his sword parallel to him. In this stance he knew that he would be less of a target and thus harder to be the victim of a violent murder. "So while we spar why don't you tell a bit about what's bothering you?" Ryuu asked with an encouraging smile as he waited for the upcoming attack.
Meanwhile while he spoke and waited, Ryuu used all of his TACTICAL THINKING ABILITY to plan his next moves. He knew that the ground was wet so he had to be careful of his footwork. Although if he could force Kurisuna to make a quick turn it could cause her to fall. But even better Ryuu could use the mud on the ground for tossing at his foe. Undoubtedly she would feel foolish with mud on her clothing and would stop trying to kill Ryuu in favor of not trying to kill Ryuu. THIS WAS RYUU'S GREATEST PLAN YET.

''You would do better to focus on this spar than on my so-called issues,'' she interjected with an easy smile, intent on steering him away from the topic he so curiously adhered to. What business was it of his, to divine her mental plan? If he, an utter stranger, believed he could motivate the redhead to impart any details, he thought wrong; more than that, if he'd concluded she would spare him the consequences of inattention in a bout involving some very real blades, he may find himself missing a digit or two by the end of their match.
''You have my work cut out for me.'' With a nonexistent guard, and a sword held vertically to counter the drain of wielding a 3lbs weapon, he not only exposed his hand, but placed his blade in a position unfit to deflect her own. There was little point, she remarked, to reducing your area if it was done in a manner that projected one's fist like a slab of meat laid bare on a butcher's board. It would be too easy to lunge and take it.
There came a moment of inertia, where she declined to take the first move. Kurisuna wondered, as she steeled her arms against the downward pull of her katana (no difficult feat, but she was not one to tire easily), how long he could lift the somewhat heavier spatha in a one-handed grip before he inevitably faltered. ''Well?''

"If you insist." Ryuu replied while returning the smile. Although it wasn't present at all, Ryuu was in fact disappointed. Because while he was able to solve the MYSTERY OF WHETHER HE WOULD BE ABLE TO SOLVE THE OTHER MYSTERY. Ryuu still wasn't able to solve THE OTHER MYSTERY. Afterall Ryuu only wanted her to tell a complete stranger, who she had only known for about twenty or so minutes, about her deepest personal problems. Was that so much to ask?
"How do I have your work cut out for you?" Ryuu asked. Was it because he was proving himself to be a master with the sword already and that he would undoubtedly pose a great challenge? That had to be the case. Plus it would explain why Kurisuna hadn't taken the initiative and attacked already. "So you want me to attack first then?" Ryuu asked as he noticed that she was readying herself. WHAT WOULD HAPPEN NEXT?

Nurturing the nascent talents of an amateur was as dreary as she remembered it. Her latest charge was, in spite of his apparent obliviousness, and in many regards, no different than the rest of the Shinigami she'd taught. They were so calculating, so cautious. To take the initiative was as alien a concept as a blade that could not kill. These never learned—not until they discarded the inhibitive fear of what Consequence had coveted for them. ''I'll spare you any verbiage,'' she told him impatiently, ''so come at me with a killer's intent. If you hesitate, you'll lose more than just this spar.''

THERE WAS NO MORE WITTY BANTER. This saddened Ryuu because witty banter was fun. He was able to learn more about others and their interests. Then use that knowledge to taunt them or mess with them at a later date. BUT NOW SHE WOULDN'T HAVE ANYMORE. This would make things much less interesting.
BUT THEN RYUU REMEMBERED THE OTHER PART OF WHAT KURISUNA SAID. She said to come at her with a killing intent. That was something that Ryuu was quite good at. In fact Ryuu could say that doing something with killing intent was one of his specialties. It was even one of his favorite hobbies. Besides now that he thought about it he remembered that swinging a sword was fun. SO DESPITE THE LACK OF WITTY BANTER (what kind of fight didn't have witty banter) THE FACT THAT HE GOT TO SWING A SWORD AT SOMEONE WOULD MAKE UP FOR IT.
"Okay." Ryuu said with an affirmative smile to show that he understood her directions. Stepping forward on the side that didn't have the sword, Ryuu utilized the swing that he had just learned before stepping to his sword side and utilizing the second part of the set he had learned. THE STABBING PART.

The foliage shrank away suddenly, dewed and glistening with forgotten pearls, unfolding an expanse of wide-open field. The practice area, leveled ground a rough diameter of 20 cubits, hemmed the two fighters in like a second universe, this one more familiar than the last. It had claimed the lives of many, usurpers of the wastes and no-good men. But for every lifeline severed, countless more were established in its stead. The hordes could not be culled. And the Shinigami operated in ignorance, pretending that to maintain order was to eradicate the hounds of hell every time they descended from their corpse-strewn land.
His initiative sparked the same brand of unease she'd experienced upon meeting him, that paranoia-driven 6th sense bristling the hairs at the back of her neck like hoarfrost. No good. For him to rear back his sword for that end-all beheading swing in front of his opponent's blade was a dreadful mistake, but it should not be costing him tonight.
The katana veered, declining to split his chest with its long, death-dealing lick. She could hear, could feel the ruthless, frenzied voice resonating against her palm. She instinctively thought to swing where the spatha's flight would take his wrist, but that was more pointe work than she was comfortable with against the marshy, leaf-littered ground, and slicing it open, no matter how hard the spirit implored her, was out of the question.
Kurisuna employed the oldest parry in the book, then, which amounted to no special maneuver from her part; foot slid back, torso leaned in, and their weapons met, vertical and horizontal. She held against the momentum of his swing, nothing all four limbs could not absorb, and pressed on with the omnipresent threat of attacking his chest and wielding arm should he indeed disengage.

CURSES, RYUU WAS FOILED FOR THE VERY FIRST TIME. Instead of transitioning from the swinging part to the stabbing part he now found himself LOCKING BLADES IN MORTAL COMBAT. Except mortal combat in this case took the form of a training spar/way for a master swordsman to beat the tar out of a novice in order to blow off some steam. BUT EVEN SO THIS PARTICULAR POSE WAS DRAMATIC AND LOOKED COOL.
The problem was that he wasn't able to move onto the stabbing part and stab the only person Ryuu had encountered so far who had taken the time to teach him anything about using swords. Unless you count shinigami trying to stab him. Although now that he thought about it Ryuu realized that this was a pretty similiar situation. Except in this case Kurisuna wasn't being EVIL (like those other shinigami) and trying to murder him...at least Ryuu was pretty sure she wasn't trying to kill him.
But Ryuu was also facing another problem due to the position he found himself in. He had ABSOLUTELY NO IDEA what he should do when caught in this position. But Ryuu knew one thing for sure. HE WOULD NEVER BACK DOWN AND NEVER SURRENDER. Unless things got too tough and he was able to use someone else as a scapegoat or distraction. Then Ryuu probably would back down or surrender. BUT AT THIS MOMENT THAT WASN'T MUCH OF AN OPTION. So instead Ryuu stiffened his arm and threw his weight forward in order to knock Kurisuna to the ground. SURELY THIS PLAN WOULDN'T FAIL.

A ripple of amusement stole across her lips as she felt him lean into the snarl of blades. As if he could take her by force, one-handed and with his wrist at an awkward angle. For some, it was undoubtedly possible. When she cared to be, Kurisuna was dynamic and virtually inexhaustible, but no one in terms of sheer strength; and yet, the Shinigami had not surrendered so much as an inch to him.
''Martial arts aren't your strong suit either, are they.'' Her head tilted to the right, peeking at the offensive joint connecting sword-bearing hand with the forearm. There had been a naughty lilt to her voice as she'd wondered how long his wrist could hold out against the tangle of limbs contending for dominance. ''At least you're putting your back into it.''

RYUU USED THROW HIS WEIGHT INTO IT YET IT WAS INEFFECTIVE. And thus the two were still locked into A DRAMATIC BLADE LOCK OF DRAMATICNESS. Ryuu would have to think quickly in order to be victorious in this spar against a foe who was probably holding back a lot so she wouldn't kill him. At least wouldn't kill him immediately.
Smiling in response to Kurisuna's comment Ryuu then said, "You got me there. Besides if I didn't put my back into it then I doubt that would have even had a shot at suceeding." However that was when INSPIRATION STRUCK. Ryuu came up with an idea. A wonderful idea. A horrible idea. A wonderful horrible idea OF AWESOMENESS.
But this idea would take LOTS OF CAREFUL PREPARATION. Step one, would his footing still be secured when he went forth with this AMAZING IDEA. The answer was most likely. Step two actually that was pretty much it. RYUU'S PLAN WAS READY TO BE PUT INTO ACTION. But first a bit of banter was needed to distract Kurisuna from his AMAZING PLAN.
"However there is one aspect of martial arts that I'm pretty good at. The concepts." While he stated this, Ryuu's foot would fly out in a forward kick and thus he would kick Kurisuna IN THE SHIN. Undoubtedly this kick in a person's weakest point WOULD CAUSE HER DEFENSE TO CRUMBLE INTO NOTHINGNESS AS RYUU ONCE AGAIN PUT HIS WEIGHT INTO ANOTHER PUSH FORWARD. Although if it didn't THEN RYUU WOULD HAVE TO COME UP WITH SOMETHING ELSE TO TURN THE TIDES OF THIS EPIC BATTLE OF DRAMATICNESS.

The faintest dash of a smile melted away as her neck straightened from the inquisitive tilt of a song bird. He had confessed no special talent for hand-to-hand, suggesting that he had dabbled in it and not found the arts to his fancy, like she had. What concepts, then, had he familiarized himself with? Of punching, of kicking?
Pain flooded her senses. It had blossomed white hot below the knee. Her shin. He had actually struck her shin.
The indignation of it all momentarily detached her from the human condition; her breath had caught as the paroxysm had registered, but it was not the agony that had jostled her as much as the lengths he had gone to. Ah, this is what he'd meant. The tibia, that virtually unprotected, semi-rigid collection of tissue, would resonate like a death knell to anyone unaccustomed to pain. But you had to hit it just right. There had to be technique.
The thrill (along with equal parts ire) that came of his sharp, unexpected blow warped the expression on her face from the grim, tight-lipped smirk, knitting her brows and curling her lips until a lopsided grin. It was no less a grimace. She could up the ante, now.
Dipping beneath the horizon of his sword, she disengaged her katana and rotated the edge as he presumably sought to recover from the disharmonious arrangement of blade and limbs. Her weapon would slide beneath his, its point geared to slice through the male's flank with the same amount of force Ryuu had employed when he'd so tactlessly thrown his entire weight forward. She executed each bold master-stroke fluidly and unhesitatingly. Kept to delicate cat-feet.
Who knew what he'd try.

AND HIS SHIN KICKING ATTACK WAS SUCCESSFUL. Maintaining his smile, Ryuu was happy to notice that this attack even made his foe smile. BECAUSE RYUU WAS AMAZING AT BRINGING SMILES TO PEOPLE. Although it usually wasn't normal for people to smile after taking Ryuu's patented SHIN KICK OF SHIN KICKERY to the shin. BUT RYUU WAS JUST THAT GOOD AT BRINGING SMILES TO THE FACES OF OTHER'S.
AND THEN RYUU NOTICED HER COUNTER AND REACTED WITH A MASTERFUL COUNTER OF HIS OWN. Ryuu's counter attack in this case being that he sustained a cut to his side while reorienting himself. Tensing a bit at the cut, Ryuu could feel his healing ability begin to work by the time he let loose HIS OTHER COUNTERATTACK.
But unlike the first counterattack this one didn't involve him getting cut in the side. This one instead had Ryuu aiming another shin kick (now with 20% more shin kicking) at Kurisuna. Meanwhile Ryuu would now take the time to transition to PHASE TWO of the attack set that he had just learned. Bringing his sword arm back from his missed swing, Ryuu would send it forward with a stabbing attack. SURELY THIS ATTACK WOULD BE SUCCESSFUL. Although at the very least, Ryuu was certain that Kurisuna would go home with a sore shin.

Ah, the visceral flutter of a sword's caress in the lower curve of her stomach. The symbolic liaison between the blade and the thorn. Kurisuna caught the spindly trickle of blood as it wept from the slit in his skin, pressed her katana deeper into his flesh, and retracted it smoothly for the next stroke, exacerbating the relatively shallow cut into a noticeable gash. Concurrently, she had extricated herself from his immediate range, resigning to a retreat of several feet through the mire, where neither kick nor stab could reach; swordsmen fought in a series of clashes, and this one had outlasted its span.

Ignoring the wound to his side (he had taken much worse wounds before it should heal up pretty quickly), Ryuu instead focused ON HIS SHIN KICK OF SHIN KICKERY. But alas THE ATTACK MISSED FOR KURISUNA RETREATED. But this would let Ryuu show some of the other martial arts concepts that he had mastered. FOR RYUU WAS A MASTER AT MARTIAL ARTS CONCEPTS. Because who needs to know the actual skills when you can just fight dirty.
First Ryuu would utilize skill number one which was to keep on them if they retreated. Turning his shin kick into a step forward, Ryuu pulled his sword arm back into position at the same time. Continuing to advance Ryuu would be able to close the distance between him and Kurisuna faster then she could retreat. This meant that he would now not only utilize two of the other concepts. BUT RYUU WOULD COMBINE THEM INTO A SUPER CONCEPT.
These two concepts were to fight dirty and to use the enviroment to his advantage. Thus with his next step, Ryuu's foot would dip into the muddy ground and kick up LOTS OF MUD AT KURISUNA'S FACE. FOR THAT WAS THE POWER OF A SUPER CONCEPT. It allowed someone to not only fight dirty and use the enviroment BUT TO USE THE ENVIROMENT TO FIGHT DIRTY...literally.
But kicking mud at Kurisuna wasn't Ryuu's only attack at this point. FOR RYUU HAD DEVISED A MASTERFUL STRATEGY THAT WOULD TAKE A LESSER TACTICIAN YEARS TO FIGURE OUT. After he had kicked the mud at Kurisuna, Ryuu would then throw his sword out into another stab attack while Kurisuna was distracted by the mud in her face. BUT THAT WASN'T THE ONLY PART OF RYUU'S BRILLIANTLY LAID OUT STRATEGY. For Ryuu would take advantage of the close proximity and aim ANOTHER SHIN KICK AT HER SHIN.
Not only would Kurisuna be going home with a sore shin BUT SHE WOULD ALSO HAVE TO WASH THE MUD OUT OF HER HAIR. Oh and maybe get a stab wound bandaged up BUT THE FIRST TWO INJURIES WERE FAR WORSE.

There were certain things Kurisuna was particularly attuned to noticing, such as the wayward cant of a parched flower, or the spine of a novel sheathed in its improper row. Things that, like the wound splitting his flank and the absence of unfavorable emotions, implored her to correct them, to restore the rhythmic metronome from how utterly wrong it was to see him so readily ignore his injury. But she understood. And as she studied him, she made the split-second conclusion that this man could not possibly be a stranger to war.
She watched him advance and gouge his foot into the earth, flinging sludge and clumps of topsoil up her chest, into her hair, onto her face. Unsurprisingly, she neither blinked nor flinched away from the last-ditch tactics he was resorting to; a swordsman's footing, his foundation, was to be secure as well as supple, and neither qualities were enhanced by wanton kicking. The next time, she would capitalize on his impaired sense of balance; that he'd not yielded under her greater strength without both his legs to support him had been a miracle of itself.
When the Arrancar finally lurched, dragging his foot forward once he'd primed his sword as she had taught him just ten minutes ago, Kurisuna smacked the inside of his weapon and made to divert the blade from their bodies till it strayed beyond the inner angles of his wielding arm, betraying an inviting selection of vitals. Ah, but she couldn't. This was the point of no return.
Her tongue reared up, red as a gash, past the corner of her lips as she struck for her predetermined target soon as she'd redirected his longsword, her blade separating from its kin to slash the tendons at the back of his hand; she would see him disarmed, one way or another.

SUCCESS. RYUU'S KICKING OF MUD PLAN (A genius idea that would never be seen again for many years) HAD WORKED. However her reaction had been unexpected. TRULY HE WAS FACING A JUGGERNAUT OF DEATH. For who else could ignore mud to the face (although a portion of it would probably seep down and find it's way directly into her eyes soon.) NOT ONLY THAT BUT HER ATTACK CONNECTED AND CUT RYUU'S ARM.
Dropping his blade due to the injury, Ryuu was able to finish his shin kick (which was a pretty good one with even 20% more shin kickery than he had anticipated) before going to a neutral stance. Afterall, the spar was over now that Ryuu was disarmed. And while it was tempted to try a tackle while he had some momentum going (and mud in his foe's eyes), Ryuu figured that the odds of Kurisuna teaching him again would diminish if he tried that.
"Well that was fun." Ryuu said with a respectful bow and his trademark smile. "It seems like I still have a lot to learn though. Would you be able to teach me again sometime?" Ryuu asked Kurisuna. He did need the lessons. Besides he had already noticed so much about his teacher and he was eager to learn more about her. Like the reasoning behind her heisitation to go for a more dangerous strike. And how he could convince her to abandon that heisitation. But for now Ryuu would focus on convincing her to teach him again.

Her leg pulled back in tandem with his as it rocketed ineffectually to catch her shin, the angry blade swerving to designate the Arrancar's throat as its target of choice. She eyed him, amused, but there had been a flicker of apprehension in the glare she'd shot the male earlier, as if she knew of this undisclosed secret beneath the mask; like her vocation had called for her to reach into abysmal recesses and pull out, glinting, with the key to his unusual behavior. Truth be told, she knew what to suspect.
Kurisuna barked mirthlessly as he beamed at her. She did not like this role of mentor. More to the point, she did not like him, but with a haughty curl of the lips had to concede that he had, for better or for worse, cinched her curiosity in a tight strange-hold. ''That depends. What do you make of your wounds? Get hurt often?''

Kurisuna was most fortunate in dodging RYUU'S AWESOME SHIN KICK OF AWESOMENESS. For had it connected it would have undoubtedly made her burst into tears FOR ALL ETERNITY. But instead she managed to dodge the attack. BUT IF THEY WERE TO FACE OFF AGAIN WOULD SHE ONCE AGAIN BE ABLE TO AVOID HIS DEADLY SHIN KICK?
Maintaining his smile and not flinching when Kurisuna brought it up to his throat, Ryuu knew for a fact that she wasn't going to kill him. She had passed up too many easy oppurtunities to choose that one to deliver a final blow. It was undoubtedly just a test to see what Ryuu's reaction would be. AND RYUU WOULD PASS IT WITH FLYING COLORS.
Taking note of Kurisuna's body language, Ryuu would notice a variety of different things. First off he noticed suspicion and caution. She undoubtedly had considered the possibility of him being an arrancar. Not only that but there also seemed to be hostility. Was this due to her usually having that sort of demeanor or was it because of her suspicions. Or maybe it was a combination of the two. Yet Ryuu also noticed that she was curious. It may have been dangerous to interact with her more but then things would be a bit less fun. Besides he was sure that he could turn that curiousity into FRIENDSHIP. THEN THEY COULD GO TO A KAROAKE PLACE TOGETHER AND THEY COULD FIGHT CRIME AND KILL RANDOM PEOPLE TOGETHER.
"I've taken my fair share of wounds. The ones you gave me will heal up in no time. I would love for you to teach me again though." Ryuu said in response to Kurisuna's question. Hopefully she would agree and then Ryuu WOULD BRING A SMILE TO HER FACE. Which he technically already had given several of the grins that he had noticed. BUT HE WOULD BRING MORE SMILES ALONG WITH HAPPINESS AND JOY AND SONG. THEN THEY WOULD BECOME BEST FRIENDS AND TELL EACH OTHER STORIES AND HAVE SLUMBER PARTIES WHERE THEY STAYED UP ALL NIGHT AND ATE RAW COOKIE DOUGH.

Acutely aware that it was high time she headed back to society, Kurisuna whirled around, unable to suppress the appeal to reason nagging at the back of her head; though she did not share a mutual concern with many, she remained Captain of the 3rd, and it would not do to be missing for any measure of time, regardless of whether Sumie was more than qualified to lead in her absence. ''I see. I would ask for your name, but I'm convinced I would not get your real one,'' she spoke coolly. ''Mine is Kurisuna. I'm certain we'll meet again.''
Trouble had a way of finding her, she remarked mindfully, completing her pivot to tread the forest paths back to Seireitei.

AND THEN KURISUNA BEGAN TO LEAVE. Although she did make a completely accurate statement when she said that he would lie about his name. BUT MAYBE ONE DAY THAT WOULDN'T BE THE CASE. AND IF THAT WAS THE CASE THEN RYUU TELLING HER HIS TRUE NAME WOULD BE A SIGN OF THEIR SUPER AWESOME FRIENDSHIP. But sadly that day wasn't today. BUT IT MAY BE ONE DAY.
"Pleased to meet you Kurisuna. I can't wait to meet you again." Ryuu said to Kurisuna. However before he could introduce himself to the taicho, she had already left. AND SO OUR BRAVE HERO WENT OFF INTO THE FOREST FOR MORE EXPLORING.
