So, I started this blog because something I need to vent about.
In short, never do a favour for a friend.
3 years ago a school friend got me to join NationStates. For those that don't know, NationStates is a political RP site. You make a nation, and everyday it tells you that something has happened in your nation and asks you what you want to do about it.
Most of the action occurs on off-site forums however. My friend asked me to join the region he was part of, the LKE.
So time passes.
Later on I had just gotten into Minecraft and was seeing if anyone else in the region played. The Emperor of the LKE told me of someone in TNI (another region that we are VERY close to. Most of the people in the LKE are also in TNI) had a server so I joined up there and started playing Minecraft with the guys there.
More time passes
After a while the Kaiserin (Empress) of TNI (who I knew well from LKE) approached me and said their Electoral Commissioner (the person who runs their elections) had stood down and asked me if I would take over. She made out it would be a simple job.
For simplicity's sake, I have changed the NationStates and TNI terms to something more familiar.
At the start of every month I open nominations for either their parliament or president. Odd numbered months are parliament, even are president. 96 hours after that I close nominations and open polls. 48 hours after that I close polls. Furthermore in the second week of every other president month I hold polls for their UN delegate in the same way.
I have been doing it for about a year now. It has not been simple.
First of all you keep getting hit with by-elections. Usually these aren't too much of an issue.
But, here are some of the more interesting issues I have encountered.
Pretty early on I had an election with two presidential candidates. It ended up in a tie. Normally if there was a tie you'd get rid of everyone not involved in a tie and run it again. However since there were only two I could have ended up running it perpetually. Thankfully a re-run produced a winner.
Last month was particularly bad. It was a presidential month with UN as well. The presidential went easily enough, but then I was informed that I needed to hold a by-election for parliament for 2 seats. Before nominations closed I was informed someone else had resigned. I had to decide whether to run two by-elections or extend nominations and have one. I chose to extend.
Then the UN election came around. Someone nominated 'the incumbent'. I checked past election threads and found that the person who had also put themselves forward had won the last election, so I assumed they were seconding it. Turns out I had missed a by-election thread. But that was irrelevant because you can't nominate by proxy.
I'm writing this shortly after opening this month's parliament nominations, and then being told that the electoral system was changed in September and no-one had told me. (I only go to TNI to run elections, and as such don't keep up with any legislation)
So, someone requested judicial review a few days ago to see if I should be running this election. I've decided to run it until the courts tell me otherwise.
EDIT: Both rabbits have returned. One hopped back last night, the other did so this morning.

About an hour ago my sister came into my room to inform me that the family's rabbits have escaped. Apparently they bit a hole in their pen and escaped through there. I have a 14 year old sister and an 8 year old brother, both are rather distraught. There are a number of factors which make searching rather difficult. First of all we live in a suburban area. As such there is a large amount of gardens with foliage to hide in. They could be in any bush, or down the gap between a wall and a garden. Secondly we live on a hill, and all the streets are higgledy piggledy, To get to the house behind ours (which is probably less than 100m, but I am terrible at estimation) one would have to travel about a mile. Thirdly, winter is closing in and the days are shortening. Sunset was at about 5pm today. So, all five of us have been out, but no luck. I did see a poppy seller* and she's been asking around. Assuming practice is different in the USA and thus explanation is required, on the 11th of November (and the weeks leading up to it) it is customary to wear a paper poppy in remembrance of those who lost their lives in WW1 and wars since. People sell poppies to raise money for the Royal British Legion, a charity aiding both current and ex-servicemen.

So, after much procrastination I was about to log off to go to bed when my ex popped up complaining of being ill. It is now after 3am. I am probably going to be wrecked in the morning T_T.
Something else, when we were together I bought her tickets to a concert. That concert is tonight. So yeah >_<.
I know my problems are relatively mild, and it wasn't a bad relationship, but I still am having problems over two months since break-up. Never again Jeff....

Today Spiral Knights released their long-awaited guild hall update, allowing massive guild hall expansion and furnishing.
I'm (a low ranking) part of one of the more prominent guilds, and the higher ups went and bought all the things, then opened it up to the public. We had so many the guild got a second instance. There was so much lag...
Also, I am rping the guild's butler, so I had a lot of things to do. Was fun ^_^

Finished VLR. + Plot measures up to 999's, if not exceeding it. Plenty of mind screws. + Flowchart system is BRILLIANT. No more repeating rooms! + Puzzles are on par with 999's, if not bettering them. + Rooms are generally less cluttered, making exploration easier. + I do like being able to solve mysteries before the solutions are revealed. Theories being proved (more or less) right, and all that. + I thought having two passwords was a nice touch. One to escape, another for secret info. Even if sometimes the secret password was significantly easier or harder to get than the escape. + I REALLY liked the theme of jumping between realities to gain info to use in another alternate timeline. + Controls are good. However this is a text adventure with a few puzzle segments thrown in, so - Localisation could have been better. Not entirely sure why they removed the English voice acting from the European version. Some typos in the game script. Particularly erogenous case where one of the secret text files runs off the bottom of the screen. Odd decision to use donno instead of dunno. - So bad it deserves its own point, the auto text scroll feature is lined up to the voice acting...which is in Japanese. As such sometimes the text scrolls really slowly, others it gives you about half a second to read a 12 word sentence. Fortunately you can cycle back through text. - Why is there slowdown in a point and click adventure game? And why can we look at the floor or ceiling when that does nothing (including it removing the ability to turn until it auto scrolls down) - With jumping between alternate paths, one does forget what happened in the path they are on. A screen showing BP and current groups would be nice. - Because gameplay has changed to getting the password to the safe with the key in it, it is possible to skip all the puzzles if one already knows said password. Because of this theoretical occurrence, a lot of the character interaction has been removed from the puzzle sections, instead being limited to the novel sections. As such, I think VLR has lost something from 999. - Many of the endings, particularly the Game Over endings don't have closure. Sigma is still alive, whereas in 999 there was only one ending where Junpei's fate was ambiguous. Many of VLRs endings leave Sigma trapped in the facility, but alive. What happened after? - The true ending is just a sequel hook, and doesn't make it clear that it everything. Indeed, in the bonus ending someone (probably the player him/herself) is told to go to a certain point in time and change the world. However we can't. Not in this game anyway. I thought there was going to be another arc, like Okami after Oorochi, LttP's dark world, weeks 2 and three in TWEWY.
Dio. He was aware he was on the moon. How come he didn't think it weird that gravity suddenly appeared normal? Why did his bombs also slow down by radical 6? Does he have the virus? (A secret file mentions that the bracelets inject upon being attached. Was it injecting them with Radical 6?)
Why couldn't Clover contact Snake? (Pretty obvious. It was 45 years in the future, after two apocalypses, he's probably dead. And also there are at least 3 espers nearby who may be stealing her powers)
Why were Clover and Alice dressed the way they are?
Where is Santa?
To a lesser extent, what happened to Lotus between the two games?
Why are so many people on the moon?
What happened in Nevada in late 2028? (Sequel hook)
Who is Phi?
What happens in all the endings where someone escapes?
Who is Brother?
In Luna's ending, where did Gol-M go?
Why didn't Sigma notice his voice was croakier, his eye was missing? Especially in the apocalypse section.
What is K's purpose?
Why in the Security room did Phi's voice speed up? Since both were affected by Radical 6, then it can't have been Sigma getting affected by it.
In one path where Alice is cured, how come she is aware of things appearing to be sped up, when everything was slowed down to appear consistent with relative time?
Clover "killed" Luna because she thought she killed Alice. But, what happens in endings where the bodies are discovered at the same time? (Maybe Clover did kill Luna before everyone else found Alice)
If you have any questions about 999 or VLR that you wish to ask me, do so.

A few days ago I went through all my Facebook friends, and counted how many of them I could attribute to a certain single person, one of my earliest internet friends, who I met 7 years ago.
One of my first internet communities that I joined was a guild on *coughneopetscough* dedicated to Animal Crossing, so I counted every friend I made from that guild, and friends I met from those friends, and so on. Also, one day I saw a banner ad for another game, the European version of *coughMapleStorycough*. As such, I counted everyone from there.
Now, these were Facebook friends. Some people had made multiple accounts, joke accounts etc. Then there are all the other people I don't have on Facebook. This also says nothing about how close I am to them. And of course, I've probably miscounted a few.
The number? One hundred and ten. Because seven years ago a girl made an Animal Crossing guild, after a friend leant her the game, someone she was only friends with because they played checkers on rainy days.
One hundred and ten people.

First of all, as a follow up to my last post here, yes, the exam paper was as expected. Remember back in the day when you sat in math class wondering when you would ever need this stuff? Well, since Uni economics is apparently more quantitative than it was at GCSE or A-Level, it appears I do. And I needed it for my last IC post here!My working out ended up looking something like this. Anyway, thanks to the guys on the box for helping me with this, especially Aki. No thanks to Katsu however Edit: Blasted image tags not working.

Some fanart I made today, along with description
The Eternal Duel Between a Knight and his Foe, a Black Kat. ~An animation by GFJmember en.flipnote.hatena.com/9C650D7059902293@DSi/movie/902293_0C4C3626DE8AC_000A knight skulks about the clockworks alone. He has heard tale of the chaos in Moorcraft and so stalks the corridors, seeking out Black Kats. He finds his prey, he readies his shot. A charged bullet from his Storm Driver. He fires. The projectile flies true, the mark sees it, too late to dodge. Yet the cursed beast conjures forth in a dark ritual another cursed beast. A zombie. The zombie intercepts the shot, having no soul to sacrifice in the service of its dark master, and returns to the dust from whence it came. Undeterred, our hero charges again, letting loose another round, yet the Kat raises more of the undead. Locked in eternal struggle, which will falter first? The resolve of the Knight, or the strength of the Kat's reserves?
If there is demand, I can explain the current event on SK to peoples.

Now, I believe this is probably cbox as a whole, rather than AK. But meh. In NI, the only company providing public transport is Translink, which is in the public sector. So basically, it is local government which is blocking this. I don't know much about UK or EU freedom of speech laws. On another note, of freedom of speech, there have been too many f-bombs dropped during this trip >_> Got two middle aged ladies to the right, and a group of 4 or so male 'sporty types' behind me >_>

Seeing as some forum users have expressed an interest, here is a basic guide on how to play shogi. I should note that I only know how to play it, and do not necessarily claim any proficiency at the game. Furthermore, I may be in error here. I apologise profusely for any errors in this post. Finally, this guide shall be without images. Apologies for that. The guide shall often compare the game to Western chess (henceforth known as Chess) First of all, the main differences. - The board is 9*9, as opposed to 8*8. Furthermore, the board is usually a single coloured grid, as opposed to the black and white check pattern.
Pieces are various sized pentagons with a kanji character from them, rather than a small figure.
Aside from each side's king, each sides' pieces are identical. Their affiliation is dependent on the direction the pentagon is pointing.
- Obviously, there are some pieces in shogi which are not in chess. Similarly, chess has some pieces which shogi does not, most notably the queen. Thirdly, some pieces which are present in both games have slightly different move sets.
- Most pieces (except for the king or gold general) may be promoted (naru) by moving them into, out of or within the opponent's back three rows (base).
Aside from the rook and bishop, all promoted pieces gain the move set of the gold general.
Except in cases where the piece cannot move any further forwards and cannot move back, one does not have to promote. A promoted piece cannot be unpromoted unless captured.
Promotion is signified by turning the piece over, where there is a different character, usually drawn in red.
- Most significantly, a captured piece can then be played by the side that captured it, now affiliated to them. Promoted captured pieces will be unpromoted upon capture.
Placing a piece on the board takes up the player's turn. Pieces can be placed on any empty spot on the board as long as it has a valid move. (IE, you can't place pawns on the back row).
Despite the above, there are two instances where a pawn cannot be played, known as kinjite; If there is already a friendly unpromoted pawn on that column or if the placement would result in immediate checkmate.
Placing a piece inside an opponent's base does not let you promote it; it must make a move first.
How to play: Most of this section is the same for chess. Unless otherwise noted, or something is blatantly different, assume it is the same as chess. Players take turns, making one move to turn. Black moves first. Pieces are taken by moving one of your own onto the same spot as an opposing player's piece. (particularly unsure of this next bit) The game is over when a player takes the opponent's king, NOT when they achieve checkmate. Check (oute) or checkmate (tsumi) do not need to be declared.
Initial Board layout: Pieces are laid out initially in the players' bases as follows: The front row is all pawns, nine of them. The back row, like chess, is mirrored. From the outside in, the pieces are as follows: Lance Knight Silver General Gold General King. As a reminder, due to the odd number of columns the king is in the middle, so there is only one of them for each side. Each side starts with two of each of the other back row pieces. The middle row only has two pieces; a bishop on the second space from their left, and a rook on the second space from their right. Yes. Each side starts on with but one rook and bishop.
Pieces: The main crux of the post. Pawn: It can move one space forwards. That's it. No double initial move and, unlike its western brethren, it captures in front of it as well, rather than forward diagonal. A promoted pawn moves in the same way as a gold general. Lance: Can move as many spaces as it wants forwards, unless there is an obstruction. A promoted lance moves the same way as a gold general. Knight: Moves in an 'L' shape. Two spaces forwards, and one space either left or right. Can jump over pieces. Unlike chess, a knight only has two possible moves, instead of eight. A promoted knight moves in the same way as a gold general. Silver General: Can move one space in any diagonal, or one space forwards, giving it a maximum of 5 possible moves. A promoted silver general has, of course, the same moves as a gold general. Gold general: Can move one space up, down, left, right, forward-right or forward-left, giving it a maximum of 6 possible moves. A gold general cannot be promoted. King: Exactly the same as chess. It can move one space in any of the 8 directions. A king cannot be promoted. Bishop: Exactly the same as chess. It can move as many spaces as it wants in any of the four diagonal directions. A promoted bishop is known as a horse, and can either move as many spaces it wants diagonally, or one space horizontally or vertically. Rook: Exactly the same as chess. It can move as many spaces as it wants horizontally or vertically. A promoted rook is known as a dragon. You can probably guess how it moves. It can move as many spaces as it wants horizontally or vertically, or one space diagonally.
Other notes Impasse (Jishoge) If both kings are in their opponent's base, and neither is in check, the game ends. Players count up their scores based on the number of pieces they have, with rooks and bishops counting for five points. Repetition (Sennichite) If the same scenario occurs four times (same piece layout, same pieces in reserve, same turn order) then a rematch occurs, with players changing sides. If this occurs because of one player continually giving check, then that player looses.
Final words If you are aware of any errors, or something needs clarified, please PM me. Thanks to Nintendo for releasing 42 All Time Classics, where I learned Shogi from.

The Student's Union at University recently had elections for the seven student officer positions. The president and six vice-presidents and all that. The results have come in during the past few hours.
There are seven seats available.
One ticket has managed to take all seven seats.
The same situation occurred last year. It is safe to say that the ticket that had the clean sweep this year has continuity with the one which one last year, with two incumbents running, and endorsements from at least two others.
The win has been controversial, for several reasons, not least due to allegations of foul play. This echoes similar criticism levied at last year's winners.

Double whammy today.
First of all, that paper some of you may have seen me mention this week? It is done, and it is due for Monday. However Uni is closed until Tuesday.
Monday is St Patrick's Day, and in previous years there has been trouble in an area called the Holylands, a part of Belfast with a high student population. People tend to drink too much. The Uni has given us a long weekend so that those who live on the island, but have a term-time address at the University, go home for the weekend. Though I must say, it appears that the problems are decreasing, thankfully. And there is suggestion that it isn't students that are causing the problems, but others come up and start problems.
Secondly, my laptop is dead. Last week the connector for the power supply came off inside the unit. It was working fine, apart from my inability to charge it.
It was sent in for repairs, but apparently the damage is much worse. Apparently there was a power surge which has fried my motherboard and hard drive.
The later shouldn't impede on my activity here, I still have the netbook I use for Uni work, but I have about 3 years of my life on that machine.

Yesterday the internet watched two people build a sandcastle. xkcd.com/1190/The image has updated itself every thirty minutes since yesterday, so we have seen the pair slowly make the castle. Given that the author has on occasion used the comics to give news about his life (including his then fiancé, now wife, contracting breast cancer) some people are wondering if we are about to receive some news, either good or bad. Some theories are that either the cancer has come back, or his wife is pregnant. You can view the whole story so far at xkcd.aubronwood.com/

Small treat for you guys. There's this guy who does a weekly Spiral Knights pod-cast. Because the community is small, I'm known by said guy. Anyway, I was on a Skype call with him after he finished pre-recording a show. What I didn't know was that he was still recording. And he made an out-take reel of some stuff for those two episodes. And released the out-takes. And I am in a few of them. He isn't exactly in my good books currently. So, knowing how some of you like my accent, you can get the files from www.sklayelite.com/arsenal/forums/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=98. I hate hearing my own voice >>

Bit fed up with Uni. Actually, I always am. Despite being a Final Year student, I have been receiving emails asking me to pre-enrol for classes next year. I don't intend to be there next year, so shouldn't be getting these emails. I've removed some of the proper nouns from these emails.
On the 16th of April I received this.
Dear <School> Student, The School is holding a drop-in session on Wednesday 17 April from 2.30-4.00 pm in <Room> in the <Uni Building>, to inform you of the modules which are running in 2013-14, and deal with any related queries, in advance of the pre-enrolment module selection process, which the School will undertake later this month. We look forward to seeing you then. Best regards, <School Manager> School Manager <School> <Uni>
I ignored it, thinking it an error. However, on the 18th, I got this.
Dear <My Name> To facilitate our preparation for the next academic year, the <School> is undertaking a pre-enrolment exercise, whereby our UG students, returning for Level 2 and Level 3, are required to select which modules they intend to complete in 2013-14. It is intended that pre-enrolment will encourage students to think carefully about their module choices and progression throughout their degree. It also enables the School to plan how many teaching sessions will be required and which/how many rooms to book. It is anticipated that, by carrying out this exercise now, this will also reduce potential difficulties with the Registration Wizard for our students during the main enrolment period in September. In this respect, please complete and return the attached Advance Module Selection form to us, either in hard copy to the <School> Office (<Street Address>) or by email to <Email Address> by Friday 3 May 2013.
For your information, please find attached your Pathway Diagram, which outlines the module choices available to you, and our Undergraduate Modules booklet, which provides descriptions of each module. If you have any queries concerning your module choices, please contact the relevant Advisor of Studies, as listed below:
<Names and addresses>
Please note that your module selections are subject to satisfactory academic progress in your Level 1 or 2 modules, and to potential further amendment pending staff changes and/or sufficient enrolment numbers. Many thanks.

When I saw this in my inbox the day after, I got worried and fired off an email of my own. I got hit by a £50 fine last year because I thought their reminder email about enrolling was just sent to anyone. Apparently because my name was in it was sufficient enough for them >> I sent off this reply.
Dear <School Manager>
I am confused as to why I am receiving this email, as I am currently a final year student, and am hoping to graduate at the end of this semester, and thus will not be taking any modules in the 2013-2014 academic year.
Can you please explain why I have received this email?
Sincerely, <My name>
I received this on the 22nd.
Good morning <My name> I have looked at your record and can clearly see that you are a current final year student. I cannot explain as to why you received this email, except to say that it must have been in error and we apologise for any confusion it may have caused. Good luck with your final semester and kind regards, <Office Staff>
And so I thought all was well and good... until I saw yesterday (May 3rd) that I had received this email the day before.
Dear <My name>, Just a quick reminder to please return your pre-enrolment form to the <School> office by tomorrow (Friday 3 May) – either by email to <Email address> or by handing it in to us at <Street Address>. Kind Regards, <School> Office Team

Still worried, I emailed the advisor of studies named in the second email. I should add here that the advisor in that email was different from the person I expected it to be. No idea why.
Dear Dr <Advisor>
On the 17th of April, I received the following email.

As I said before in my initial reply which was received by the school office, I am a final year student, and as such don't expect to be here to undertake new modules next year. May I request further information that these emails are being received in error? Yours faithfully, <My name>
Later that day I got this reply.
Hi <My name>, sorry for this confusion. It seems to be a continuing administrative error. I have urged the School office to remove you from any pre-enrolment email lists. Let me know if you get another one. Best, <Advisor>
So yeah, kinda fed up. One time I got a student's sick note for some reason.

Extracts from an email
"I would like to advise you that the publication date for Second Semester examination results will be Thursday 20 June 2013."
"Once you receive your final degree classification, the Graduation Registration Wizard will become available to you on your Qsis account."
"Register for Graduation between: 23 May – 21 June 2013 by 12:30pm"
Assuming that we will receive our final degree classification at the same time as the exam results, that means we have about a day to register?
I hate my uni.

20:12 Allan Bresland yes
20:12 Jeff Brunel Kleinfeld Geary In cash?
20:12 Allan Bresland have you email him and ask for yours yes in Cash
20:13 Jeff Brunel Kleinfeld Geary Rather than a cheque? Or a bank transfer? After all, in bills, that must take a good amount of space How old are you, scammer?
20:19 Allan Bresland what did you mean you call me a scammer?
20:20 Jeff Brunel Kleinfeld Geary Because your story is full of holes o.o Hang on....
20:21 Allan Bresland never maid bye
So, let's get this straight, the federal government (presumably the US, the UK doesn't have a federal system anyway) wants to give me $50,000.00. In cash. Even if they do that in $100 bills, that would be 500 bills. Not a bank transfer, not even a cheque. Cash. Furthermore, how did he see my name on the list? I thought such things would be private. And I haven't even gotten into his use of 'lol' and spelling errors.

Well, as most of you should know, I have attempted the impossible, to draw the AK family tree. I am sure I have missed many MANY things, and my lack of artistic ability should once again be showing itself, but here it is.

Excuse me for posting on this acc. And I suppose I could put this in the news thread, but I don't think I could be impartial enough for that. Heh, I don't WANT to be impartial here.
So, as common, if easily offended, please stop reading.
The NI assembly today passed a bill to stop people with serious criminal convictions from serving as senior political advisers.
Remember NI's history, that we've had something like 30 years of conflict. We have convicted terrorists in government. The Good Friday Agreement in 1997 released all the political prisoners. So, we have had families who have lost loved ones in bombings, assassinations and other attacks seeing those who killed them getting paid large salaries to advise politicians.
We also had a by-election where someone was running against the guy who is widely believed to have killed his father.
Glad this law passed.

Today I got the results to my exams. I don't have my degree classification yet, though it seems likely that I will be graduating soon.
However, I do not wish to attend the ceremony. My parents however, do.
Ceremonies are not something I care for. And I have not been too happy with my time at Uni, so I do not want to celebrate it.
Father believes that he can make the decision. They have raised me for 22 years. The ceremony is on his birthday. He feels regret at being unable to let his mother go to such a ceremony, as he had never graduated himself.

As you may be aware, I have posted an absence for this weekend. The reason is that I am volunteering at a gaming convention.
As it is a gaming convention, I am expecting to Street Pass a lot of people. For those that are unaware, Street Pass is a feature on the 3DS where if you walk past someone who also has it, you can exchange some data, which can affect your games, depending on what games you have activated Street Pass for. For example, in Mario Kart 7, you would exchange time trial and ghost data.
In Animal Crossing: New Leaf, passing someone will have your character and house appear in an area known as the Happy Homes Showcase. Basically a showroom of a bunch of houses.
Previously I had the default brown hair. Today I visited someone's town who had the hairdressers: Shampoodle. Now, in AC, instead of just asking what sort of hair you want, they give you an obscure questionnaire. Thankfully guides exist.
However in this game they introduced sliders, including to picking your hair colour. These sliders are only labelled at the top and at the bottom. You cannot tell what colour corresponds to which part on the slider, and where the boundaries are. Either due to the slider being an inaccurate system to pick a hair colour, my guide being wrong or both, I (according to the guide) overshot my target by a notch.
So, instead of getting an orangey colour, my character NOW HAS PLATINUM BLONDE HAIR!
I was hoping to fix it, but you can only get it changed ONCE PER DAY. True, it has been like this since the ability to change your hair colour was introduced. Anyway, I went to someone else's town to get a haircut there. Now, admittedly the shop is manned by the same NPC, but generally they are considered to be different people between towns. Just exactly the same in every single detail. For instance, the secretary of a foreign town makes reference to your own secretary as if they were different people. So, there was no reason to expect that the hairdresser in the 2nd town knew that I had a haircut, right?
NOPE! DENIED! She gave the same line the 1st one did.
So now I am going to have dozens of people see my character with platinum blonde hair!
It's humiliating and ugly and everything!
