The bipedal, vaguely humanoid Hollow leaped from rooftop to rooftop, its oversized legs giving it plenty of power to clear the oftentimes large gaps between buildings at speed. Glancing back, the masked creature let loose an angry and fearful roar; the gigantic figure in black robes that had forced it to retreat was still giving chase, and gaining ground quickly. Despite the deep gash in its shoulder, the cowardly Hollow pressed its body to move faster, to get away from the shinigami...Veering to one side, it dove off of a roof and into a narrow alleyway, desperate to lose its pursuer.
Shigeo scowled to himself as he dashed after the escaping monster, zanpakutou unsheathed and still bloody from the wound he'd delivered. If you hadn't been so damned noisy when coming down on it, we might not be here, playing hide-and-fucking-seek, snapped his weapon's spirit. It was misfortune that it turned when it did. Nothing more, Shigeo thought curtly. He had received an alert of an impending Hollow incursion while on duty in the human's world; when the beast had appeared, the seated officer made an attempt to fell the Hollow in a single blow, cleaving its head open from behind as was taught to him in the academy. Unfortunately, the hunched, long-legged creature turned at the last moment, resulting in the sword biting deep into its shoulder instead.
Rather than stay and fight, the Hollow was quick to turn tail and flee across Kyoto's rooftops, forcing Shigeo to give chase, lest it attack some innocent wandering the night. As it hopped into a dark alley, the fifth-seat frowned -- a trap, perhaps? -- but knew he had little choice; steeling himself and jumping down after the Hollow. It would not escape.

Chii seldom roamed the capital. The whole city was teeming with bounty hunters and fuck-ups the likes of which he'd nevertheless rather not tempt; as a petty, local criminal to a distant town, the risks were minimal, but one never knew, especially when the task at hand involved standing in front of the very mission station whose bulletin board might've hidden his own description. His errand of the day: replicating facsimiles of the forms depicting ''big-time'' felons.
But night was quick to fall in times of winter, and with the setting sun did the light grow dim; time to abscond the premises and tread the tedious march to camp in the biting cold before an all-consuming darkness could set in, Chii figured as he pocketed his work and slipped into an adjacent alley. The spiky-haired boy trudged along the streets, each hand rubbing the other's arm; there was very little to be looking forward to, between walking in the middle of freezing weather and actually getting back to such a cruel woman, but he had survived the acquaintanceship for two years in such a manner, and that was a feat of its own. Good to know his drawing skills were more sought after than his abilities as spiritually aware.
Tonight, though. Tonight was special. Rather, Hollow were, despite not being particularly rare around these parts; Chii hardly ever dealt with them, which was just as good, because he had disastrous allergies to man-eating beasts, the likes of which went a long way in compelling him to ignore the howl that, at such a point in time, seemed a fair distance away.
No more than a few minutes later, another roar, more bloodcurdling in nature than its predecessor, sounded alarmingly close; this time, Chii couldn't dismiss it. If it was targeting him, what more foolish than to turn his back to the source; Hollow were known to favour the spiritual sort, after all. He made a right turn, felt it so close... and came face to face with the creature soon as it landed before him with a thud, naught but a few yards away, the Shinigami hot on its tail. Just... not too hot.
At which point he pretty much just stood there, half stunned, half ''how did you let it get so far after wounding it.''

The Hollow's gaze immediately locked onto the surprised boy, letting a malicious snarl escape from its maw; it knew the shinigami was still close behind, but this child...this meal... seemed too good to pass up. It sprang forward, jaws agape...
...only to advance a few feet before Shigeo's blade cleaved its skull in twain from behind, the man having caught up while his quarry stopped to consider the young human. As the Hollow fell to the ground with a thump and began to break down, its soul en route to Rukongai, the fair-haired shinigami briskly sheathed his blade, sparing a brief glance for the child rooted at the end of the alley. "Another soul spared," he said to himself before turning to walk away.

Chii's wide-eyed gaze was quick to devolve into the bleak, unexcited front that he was so accustomed to. This one was nothing special. It had, after all, been fleeing the presence of commonplace Shinigami. The Hollow snarled, and still the child did not move, nor did he take the initiative to defend himself as it ambled forward; by then, the Soul Reaper was close, too close, and had swung to dispatch it, the blade slicing cleanly through the beast's blanched mask.
As it faded away, Chii appraised the colossal Shinigami before him and, lips furling a light sneer, replied in his dull, habitual monotone. ''I agree. That Hollow was fortunate you were at least competent enough to finish it off before I could.''

Shigeo halted midstep and turned about to face the teenage boy, eyes narrowing slightly at his tone. "Are you implying that you could defeat such a beast on your own, little boy? Don't be naive. Just because you can apparently see spiritual beings does not mean you are capable of challenging them, let alone surviving an encounter with one," snapped the giant, clearly annoyed by the slight against his combat prowess. As he resumed his brisk pace towards the other end of the alleyway, he called over his shoulder, "You were fortunate this time. The nightlife of this city is no place for one of your age; I suggest you run home. I'm certain your parents are missing you."

Just because he could apparently see spiritual beings did not mean he was capable of challenging them, let alone survive an encounter with one, he said. ''No offense, Ojii-san... but I just did.'' Semantics. Ah, well, to be fair, Chii wouldn't have needed his help, and the Hollow had been fortunate to be purified; this Shinigami was simply misvaluing him, as countless before had. Therein lied the benefits of being a human child: you just weren't worth the trouble.
''And here's the thing; I'm really quite sure mommy isn't too concerned of my whereabouts.'' This guy seemed the nice, proud (if even a little stuck-up), non-trigger-happy sort, and Chii smirked thinly; odds were the butchering of annoying teenage boys wasn't high on his to-do list, which was a good thing, because he also possessed a mild intolerance to spiritual weapons cleaving through his skull. No, he could fuck with this man, and as the soul reaper spun, Chii became suddenly agitated. ''... Hey, wait, where are you going! What about the other one?''

Bristling at the rather sarcastic child's tone, Shigeo turned about again after advancing only a few steps. "I'd think you to be more grateful after I saved your life, boy." The shinigami's face sported a scowl briefly before giving way to a look of confusion at his second statement. "What do you mean? I'm sure your mother does ca--"
Unfortunately, the seated officer was unable to finish his half-hearted attempt to reassure the pre-teen, as the latter abruptly grew quite anxious, crying out about "another one". Tensing up, Shigeo glanced around, his hand dropping to his zanpakutou's hilt. "Another one? Do you mean a Hollow? Where...?" Extending his spiritual senses, he couldn't feel anything besides the human before him, and some other souls a little further off...unfortunately, Shigeo was not terribly skilled at this particular ability, and it was possible this stranger's prowess exceeded his own in that area. "...Can you point the way, child?"

Chii gave an imperceptible shudder. The Shinigami, a man God only knew how many times as old and experienced (not to mention thrice as large), didn't suspect a thing, and had gone as far as to ask for his help. This was too good, so good the teenager almost blew his facade; he could lead this monster of a man anywhere he so desired... such as her place.
But no. In the end, he still wasn't familiar with what Shinigami were capable of, and this was an apt opportunity to learn without involving such an erratic and volatile factor like the witch. Kurisuna could wait—she knew how to occupy herself, and seldom kept track of his antics, in any case.
Chii hummed contemplatively, then pivoted, one foot sliding behind the other as he turned to face the shortest route out of the capital. ''If I'm right, it's over...'' He raised his arm, index extended... right as, for Shigeo, a distinctively Hollow-like cry would resonate beyond the outskirts he'd been in the process of designating. ''... there.''

Nodding his thanks to the young male, Shigeo gave him a stern look and a warning. "My thanks. Now, go home; as I said before, this time and place are entirely unsuited for one so young." Unsheathing his weapon, he ran out of the alley like a shot, moving along the largely deserted streets in the direction indicated.
While he did find it odd that little in the way of reiatsu was coming from that area -- certainly nothing large enough to be a Hollow -- nor were any further cries resonating through the cold air, Shigeo merely wrote it off as this Hollow's unique trait; an ability to suppress its signature, or mask it somehow... but then, how did the child sense it? I have heard tell from some others in the third division of humans with...interesting abilities. Perhaps that boy is one...a tracker of some sort? In any case...I must find it before it attacks anyone, thought the giant grimly, the idea spurring him to greater speeds.

Chii could do naught but watch as the man in robes unsheathed his Zanpakutou and, in what seemed a tremendous hurry, darted down the streets in search of the Hollow that never was. ''You ought to thank me later,'' thought the youth as he slowly bent at the knees and leaned forward. ''I'm about to teach you a lesson about trust you won't soon forget.'' With that, he took off after the titan, whose lead was a prominent, though not particularly daunting one; at this speed, Chii would be quick to catch up in spite of the Shinigami's colossal stature.
''Speaking of my parents, they always did tell me not to run around with scissors,'' remarked the boy as he held a steady pace two yards behind him. ''You could've waited before unsheathing it. Jeez, putting children on the edge like that...''

Chii's quickly approaching reiatsu caused Shigeo to slow slightly, peering over his shoulder to glare at the child. "How many times must I tell you? Go. Home," he called out, rather irritably; a moment later, he asked himself, How did he catch up so quickly? It was an odd thing, to be sure... But let's see him keep up now.
With a quick burst of reiryoku to the soles of his feet, Shigeo performed a shunpo, his image vanishing before Chii's eyes as the technique carried him forward and up; landing on a rooftop five meters ahead of his unwanted shadow, the shinigami continued his trek towards the outskirts of the town, trusting the suddenness of his disappearance and the angle of the view to make the snarky teen think him gone and give up the chase.

''My home is in this direction,'' hissed Chii reprovingly, just loud enough to be heard past the Shinigami's thundering footfalls before a soft, swishing noise had carried him atop a roof some distance ahead; the redhead stalled for a moment, looked and listened, then located the man who was, as stated numerous times already, far too large for his own good. A compelling effort, that; Chii had to credit him to some extent, though it had, ultimately, not been enough to deter the child.
Faster and wordlessly, he pressed on from ground level until a suitably low protrusion came jutting out in the form of a dwelling's eaves. He leapt what was, to a boy of his size, a remarkable height, grabbing a hold of these and hoisting himself up, then resuming this pseudo-chase; it was, at this stage, fairly evident that the youth held the advantage purely in running speed, although the Shinigami had shown quite the trick. ''I think you're a little too chubby for this.''

Shigeo entirely missed Chii's statement prior to his Shunpo, having been focused on losing the boy and fully believing he had done so. One could imagine his surprise when the youngster spoke again, quite close by -- only a short distance behind him, in fact. Why is he so damned persistent? fumed the shinigami, leaping over a small alley. How fast is he?
And I'm not chubby, damn him.
Finally, the fair-haired fifth seat came to a stop atop the wide, flat roof of a large restaurant, whirling about to stare down his pursuer. "Why do you insist on following me so?" he asked, his exasperation lending a slight edge to his tone. "I cannot protect you and fight the Hollow effectively. Go away. Go on, shoo." Grimacing, Shigeo flapped his left hand in what was clearly a dismissive gesture.

As the Shinigami drew to a halt, so did the still stoic-looking Chii soon as he'd leapt the interstice. He looked him in the eye, unfazed still, perhaps even depressingly so. ''I want to see a Shinigami in action,'' he said simply. ''Also, as I tried telling you... my house is in that direction. A little farther off, mind, and I'm still in no particular hurry to return, but that's the truth, so you can... stop doing that.'' Then, dark-rimmed eyes narrowing and tone a good deal sterner, ''You underrate me if you believe I can't handle myself.''

"...Ah," said the looming shinigami awkwardly; he did indeed feel a little foolish, now that he knew the confliction in his telling the boy to stop following and to go home. "Hm...how did you know I was a shinigami? Have you had encounters with others like me in the past?" Shigeo's curiosity was piqued now; all that this boy had said and done in so little time had showed him the truth in his comrades' statements, that not all humans were as they seemed; perhaps it was time to get some answers from the rude lad.
At Chii's reprimand, the fifth seat's eyes narrowed in kind; such a boastful child, this one was..."We shall see," came his simple and neutrally-toned reply.

The boy folded his arms across his chest and, head reared sideways, regarded Shigeo uppishly, truth being that he simply did not like the man before him. ''Yes. Do not ask me anything else,'' a voice—Chii's voice—would sound within the 5th seat's head as the child in question walked down the slope of the roof and stepped off, knees curved steeply on the landing.
''Unlike yourself, I am a sensor. I'll find the Hollow before you do, regardless of how infinitely more skilled you must think you are,'' he told Shigeo, again telepathically, before taking off full throttle down the alley; he knew the man would follow, one way or another.

Shigeo visibly flinched at the first instance of mind-to-mind communication; he was fairly uncomfortable with normal interactions with other people, and this incredibly invasive and intimate form of communication was new and decidedly unwanted. "Get out of my he- Gaaah!" His cool demeanor had slipped in his anger and unease, and the second telepathic message was no better in his eyes. Scowling heavily as Chii hopped over the edge of the roof, running off, the fifth seat shook his head, sheathing his zanpakutou for the time being. This is looking worse and worse...but...
"But", nothing. Quit being a little bitch, chase the kid down, and force the answers from him if you want to know so badly, Shigeo's zanpakutou spirit butted in, sounding rather amused. Personally, I find him quite likeable. A shame there aren't more like him.
Only because he insults me, too, thought the fifth seat grumpily, leaping down to give chase to the arrogant youth. Glowering, Shigeo did have to admit that the boy had a point; he would find the Hollow first...however, it would be the shinigami who would dispose of it.
Afterwards, he would have all the time needed to get Chii to tell his secrets.

Glancing over his shoulder, Chii ensured that the Shinigami was, as anticipated, pursuing him; it would not take the duo long, at such a hurried gait, to reach the suburbs close by, at which point the route outside the city would be a slight one, while not exactly negligible in terms of toll. Still, Chii maintained a constant pace ahead of Shigeo, his speed now in similar leagues to the soul reaper's own, the cold biting into his lungs. The residential district and its domiciles were less prominent by now, and the teenager slowed down to keep the behemoth in his midst, a second jarring, discordant roar ahead, this time accompanied by the sounds of rustling leaves and snapping boughs. Shigeo kept pace with the human tracker, silent now; his concern over the Hollow was mounting, given its prolonged silence...noticing the decreasing building density, he couldn't help but wonder how far out the beast was. At the least, it didn't seem it was in any location where it would be easy to find a meal.
When the bone-chilling roar broke the relative silence, accompanied by the sound of breaking tree limbs and other such signs of movement in the forest, the fifth seat mused, Seems like a big one...I'll need to be careful.
All he could do now was hope he arrived in time to slay it before anyone was killed.

The trees lining the entrance of the forest looming above them, Chii knew to stop; any farther could spur a whole other ball game, and the vicinity was vacant enough to serve his purpose. He raised his arm, signaling for the Shinigami to stop; mind, if he wouldn't, Chii would persistently keep at his side no more than several yards away, unhesitating as a gargantuan, phantasmagoric shape emerged from its shadow-consumed retreat.
Shigeo would be the sole witness of a beast whose form was not alike the familiar shapes of men; it was a many-limbed creature, its base composed of hideously prolonged, jagged feelers connected to the blanched bone mask signature to Hollow kind, between its blunted teeth the form of a tall, mangled and no doubt deceased adult.
Its eyes narrowed to slits, it regarded Shigeo as if recognizing him the primary threat and acted accordingly, its appendages brandishing; curiously enough, the red-haired child maintained relatively close proximity to the encroaching monster, though he appeared neither frightened, nor even apprehensive in the slightest. Slowing and then halting as the boy signaled to do so, Shigeo tensed slightly; it would seem this thick wood was hiding the Hollow. However, the lurking beast did not remain out of sight for long, slithering into view with its first victim dangling limply from its bleached maw. The sight brought disappointment and anger to the shinigami in equal measure: the former at himself -- surely he could have brought this monstrosity down before it killed the poor man, had he only been more adept in tracking its signature -- and the latter, obviously, at the Hollow, which was now glaring maliciously at him.
"Back, boy!" ordered the fifth seat, unsheathing his zanpakutou; for some reason, the child remained, seemingly unconcerned, well within range of the Hollow's deadly limbs. Damnit, kid... Shigeo fumed silently, watching the numerous tendrils the Hollow sported with a cautious eye; he had to get past them and get to the bold teen...
Hey. Dumbass. Why don't you stop and think about this for a moment? The zanpakutou spirit chose this moment to speak up once more, sounding even more amused. The kid's standing right next to the Hollow, and not even being gl-
Be silent, will you? I've already failed to save one human; I won't fail again, Shigeo thought grimly, cutting off the raspy voice; without further argument, the weapon spirit faded into the back of his mind, chuckling drily. Steeling himself, the fair-haired shinigami darted forward, moving erratically in an effort to get to the redheaded male; he may have been exceedingly rude, but that didn't mean Shigeo was about to neglect his duties of protecting those in the living realm.

There was something about the way he was being underestimated, being thought of as an inanely bold and talentless child, that made Chii's blood boil. Now, the psychopathic teen wasn't big on combat, and even less partial toward engaging Shinigami that towered over him a good two feet, but he couldn't help that borderline manic compulsion welling up inside, it was beyond him; he had to deal with this man himself, and not under a guise of deception.
The beast did swing for the boy, the latter whom, but a moment prior to impact, liberated a fallow, disassociating reiatsu, cruelly bifurcating the now howling creature's appendage into halves across the whole of its length and spraying the youth almost entirely ruby red... or so it would appear to Shigeo. ''I'm not much of a fighter, Shinigami-san,'' Chii admitted slowly as he glanced at the adjacent 5th seat, his thinly smiling face darkened with blood. ''I'm not strong like you, or brave like you...'' The monster's unscathed tentacles suffered similar fates then, some splitting, some snapping into impossible shapes, some even seeming to decompose as it thrashed wildly as if in agonizing pain. ''But there are some things I am good at.''

Shigeo's valiant charge to save the boy from what might have been a horrible death came to a screeching halt, as the seemingly-weak human performed a horrific display of power: literally rending the massive Hollow limb from barbed limb through no visible means. As the fifth seat's pale face blanched further, his zanpakutou spirit remarked scornfully, I did try to tell you, didn't I? But you don't listen well at all. Just because he's a scrawny brat doesn't mean he's weak...just like you being a beefy lunkhead doesn't make you worth spit.
"Just...what are you?" Shigeo's query came, barely more than a hoarse whisper; this massive beast might have proven a challenge to even a fukutaichou, not to mention himself; yet, this little boy, barely a teenager in appearance, had ripped it to shreds in mere moments. Now Shigeo found himself forced to regard the lad in a new light -- as a potentially powerful being...and possibly a threat.

''Your new opponent, I've decided,'' spoke Chii as he spun to face this new foe, middle finger snapping against his thumb; at this, the Hollow began to dissolve as had the former, and the boy's fallow reiatsu began to die down, though he remained streaked with red, and the thickets shifted as if to mend itself. Truth be told, hallucinations were costly to maintain for prolonged periods of time. ''What's wrong? You're looking a little pale.''

The shinigami's eyes narrowed as the blood-soaked child confirmed his status: he was Shigeo's foe. This he could understand, could deal with -- regardless of this boy's age, he would face and defeat him. As his resolve returned, so too did the color to his face. "Nothing is wrong, boy," he replied coolly, flourishing his zanpakutou. "You have impressive powers, I will admit, and you aided me in locating and defeating a Hollow. However...if you call yourself my enemy, I have no choice but to treat you as such."
Quite suddenly, Shigeo would dart forth, his blade describing a rising arc as he came close enough to strike; if successful, Chii would find himself with a bloody gash from his right hip to left shoulder.

Chii's lips curled a haughty smirk as Shigeo mentioned ''assisting'' him, considering how the Shinigami hadn't actually done a thing but leap to the boy's aid. ''You're a little reckless,'' he remarked, sidestepping to the left of Shigeo's trajectory, though the titan would perceive nothing of the sort, at least neither via sight nor hearing; to him, it would be as if the teen hadn't budged a muscle, and the Zanpakutou would strike true, slicing across his chest and midsection.
The illusion staggered, its fists clenching, a horrifying grin spread across that same face. ''Mmm... That felt good,'' he chimed appreciatively, his eyes glazing in a rapturous madness as his fingers unwound and toyed at the split flesh. Certainly, the Shinigami could be well within his second strike by now, but he would enlighten him nonetheless, his tone of voice nothing if not bordering on ecstatic: ''My name's Chii. Yours?''

That "felt good"? Shigeo stared, disgusted, as the boy -- Chii, he said his name was, sounding almost happy about his wound -- ran his hands along the bloody gash in his body. "You..." Shigeo snarled, confused and frustrated; this child should be on the ground, dying, not conversing idly! The shinigami lashed out a second time, bringing his zanpakutou in a vicious overhand swing that aimed to cut from the teenager's left shoulder and travel straight down along his body.
Why do you think that will work if the first attack did not...? You really are a very simple-minded thug, aren't you? observed the weapon's spirit, its hoarse laughter filling Shigeo's mind.

Nega Chii's gaze fixed the blade as it was lifted, this time a little warily. ''What, agai-'' All too quickly, Shigeo had brought his Zanpakutou down, false perception telling him that, indeed, it had sliced through its designated route in spite of there being naught but empty space before him. The child's faux-body stooped involuntarily with the force of the sword, and yet he still stood, albeit grievously wounded, a second deadly gash running down his torso. He groaned once, panting now, his hands propped upon each respective knee for support, the lingering smell of blood seeming heavy in the air. ''What the hell. You want to bifurcate a kid—one that's yet to even fight back, at that—for asking your name?''
Straining, he recovered enough to, at the very least, stand erect and raise his head, his expression a bizarre mixture of confusion, reproach, fear. ''What kind of person are you?! Wait, I know...'' The boy's eyes narrowed nastily, judging him, the corners of his lips turned into a frown. ''You're a fucking monster, no better than the Hollow you slay.''
Safe to say Chii, the original, was having the time of his life with this man; as the Shinigami had swung, he'd silently retrieved one of his many knives, and as the hallucination would be about finish (if Shigeo would even let it), the child would take a step toward him, crouch down and aim to slice across the back of the 5th seat's left ankle. How. How is he still standing? Still talking? He's...hell, he's been killed twice over now and he still stands. Shigeo was confused, angry now...and though he would be the last to admit it, his normally unflappable behavior had slipped enough to show the beginnings of fear. As Chii straightened up, berating him, the blond took an involuntary step backwards, his gaze transfixed by the impossible sight.
"Shut up. Shut UP, damn you," Shigeo hissed in reply to the maimed child's accusations; how could he be a monster? He had spent decades training to become a shinigami -- a protector of innocent souls, a guide to a better place for them, a slayer of the abominable Hollows that preyed upon them -- and decades more performing those duties, swiftly and efficiently. I am an exemplary shinigami, the giant told himself. I'm not the one being cut to ribbons and acting as though it's nothing. So how the hell am I the monster?
When you're done losing your fucking mind, I suggest you move away from this kid, Shigeo's zanpakutou spirit advised. Something's clearly wrong he-
At this point, a groan of pain escaped from Shigeo as he felt steel split the flesh of his ankle; lurching as support on his left leg weakened, the shinigami executed a sloppy shunpo, only traveling three meters to his right before falling to one knee and glaring daggers at the bloodied child. "What did you do?" he growled, blue eyes flashing.
...I did tell you to move. Next time, don't be so slow, stated the weapon spirit reproachfully.

The hallucination cackled at Shigeo's newfound instability, then laughed, giggled somewhat, and burst into an even more riotous guffaw, with Chii grinning at his success; his heart, however, leapt a little as the Shinigami vanished, only to reappear nearby naught but three meters away—not far enough to dispel his ability, although he would not be continuing this game for much longer as his nonexistent self would cease, grin bloodily at Shigeo with a sadistic sort of mirth, then vanish, as by a shunpo. No, auditory hallucinations were much easier on him, and with the 5th seat suffering solely from such a torment, Chii intended to relocate himself atop the closest low-lying bough, careful to avoid the snapping of wood.
''You're a failure to your organization,'' said a harsh, wizened voice matter-of-factly.
''I didn't know you had it in you, butchering a child...'' This one was decidedly feminine. ''MURDERER!''
Then, almost all concurrently, a maelstrom of vocalizations would sound in Shigeo's head, most fragmented, hardly even controlled by Chii, some distinct and comprehensive.
''What are you waiting for? Finish the fucker off!''
''Entrails, lots of them... I'll give it all, just as you asked... no, mother; I'm always a good boy.''
