Name: Nakao Aya
Gender: Female
Age: 224
Reiatsu Color: A dull grey
Reiatsu Aura: Predatory
Faction: Shinigami
Rank: Second Division; Unseated
Appearance: At a gangly five feet and ten inches, Aya is composed mostly of rather sharp angles. Her frame might even be elegant, not unlike that of the noblewoman, but Aya believes some things about her appearance seem... off. She blames a combination of her lack of curves and awkwardly long legs for it. The truth, of course, is that her natural stiffness exaggerates her slender frame.
Due to the misfortunate circumstances of her genetics and disposition, Aya is ultimately rather plain-looking. Stress and concern have lined her otherwise delicate-looking face, particularly in the case of wrinkles between her brows and those denoting frowns around her pale lips. Her hair, a messy, brown affair, is usually hastily tied up in a bun, and her wide green eyes often communicate a panicked state of mind.
Personality: Aya is, put simply, high-strung. She cares about pleasing others and doing her duty properly. Many times, the eggshells she walks on are entirely imaginary, but nonetheless, her speech is stiff and formal with nearly everyone. With her recent induction into the Gotei, her inability to relax has only been exacerbated, and when in her usual state of panic, she is prone to letting her internal thoughts through unannounced.
Of course, with the need to please, the tense woman is diligent and attentive with her job, though her observation skills don't translate well to social communication. With those she knows in a more intimate manner, her demeanor relaxes, and she may speak her mind, but people in such a relationship number few, and Aya often struggles to recognize people as transitioned from aquaintaince to friend.
A bit of a pacifist, she avoids conflict if at all possible. When under the influence of her zanpakutou's spirit, however, or when a situation requires, her reserved nature is peeled away, and her wrath displays itself in a rather reckless manner. This is partly because of a lack of confidence in her tactical and analytical skill but moreso because her anger rarely sees opportunity to seep out, and when it does, the gentle doe becomes the raging alligator.
History:
1776 n.w.: Nakao Aya born on May 2nd to the widowed Nakao Chiaki. Chiaki dies in childbirth, leaving Aya in the care of Nakao Subaru, Aya's grandmother.
1800 n.w.: As is tradition, Nakao Aya is brought before the family guardian spirit, Wani. Aya obtains Wani's abilities in the form of a zanpakutou, though she is not yet permitted to have it.
1833 n.w.: Nakao Aya begins training in private with Subaru to hone her reiatsu abilities given by Wani. Aya spends time daily with Subaru and must visit with Wani once a year.
1876 n.w.: Aya is permitted to visit the streets of Seireitei in the hopes that she will aspire to join the Gotei as well as make friends.
1921 n.w.: Now a young woman, Aya debates her choices about joining the Gotei. Except for her grandmother, she has none she is close to.
1935 n.w.: Nakao Subaru passes away. Aya, distraught and friendless, joins the Gotei in the hopes of finding a new place. Her intimacy with Wani is greater than ever, though Aya fears the massive reptile.
1938 n.w.: After a short bit of training on the formalities, Aya is placed as an unseated Shinigami in the Second Division. There, she meets the Taichou Hitoshi Kenta. Aya spends most of her time doing diligent paper work. She rarely interacts with her superiors.
1960 n.w.: With Kenta replaced by Hitoshi Harupia and a new Fukutaichou in place as well, Aya withdraws further into her solitude, working hard but always avoiding contact beyond orders with other shinigami.
2000 n.w.: Current time.
The Nakao family established a relationship with the spirit, Wani, sometime before the formation of Seireitei and the beginning of written history. As such, the connection between Wani's kind and the Nakao family is strong even in the present. Every zanpakutou in the Nakao family is related to the original spirit, Wani, and a select few recieve the great mother herself as their protector. Prior to Aya's birth, her mother possessed Wani as her zanpakutou, though through some mysterious will, Aya's birth was too great for Chiaki, and ultimately, Wani was passed down into Aya's hands.
Aya, a bookish, timid girl, lived with her grandmother in isolation, learning to refine the abilties given to her by the lizard mother. She made no friends beyond the walls of her family's home and liked it that way. She spent her years buried in books and education. She enjoyed writing poetry and drawing art to pass the time, though she had little of it with all of her training with her grandmother.
As years passed, she began to reach the age where she would have to join the Gotei's ranks, but Aya fretted in her isolation. She would have to be a part of a division and interact with others beyond her family. It seemed daunting. It wasn't until Subaru passed away that Aya finally did decide that the Gotei must be her new home. She trained slowly, learning the formalities by heart, and when she finally joined the second division, she felt lost. She liked the Hitoshi pair that led the division, but they were difficult to approach, and she withdrew into her paperwork and stayed away from her fellows as much as she could.

Zanpakutō
Zanpakutō Name: Wani
Spirit: A Zanpakutou spirit passed down within the Nakao clan for generations, this Zanpakutou is known as the "Great Mother Lizard". She is an immense reptile, stretching more than 500 meters, with a crocodile-like appearance. A multitude of red markings cover her scales, and it is said that while all seem meaningless, each is the name of a soul Wani protects. The Nakao family claims their names reside within her immense jaws.
Wani is rather complacent most of the time. Her age has earned her great wisdom, and much like the creatures her image resembles, a strong maternal instinct. Her vengeful streak is powerful, and she has a tendency to exert herself over those who wield her. In such cases, the bearer of Wani may act very much contrary to their nature and attack their enemy furiously and without restraint as the mother crocodile empowers them.
Aya is terrified of Wani.
Inner World: A murky, dense fog surrounds Wani's home. The fog hides an infinite swamp, where thick trees stretch above the water. Peering into the water can convince the viewer that something lives beneath as reptilian shapes slither and stir in the depths. It is said that those are the living offspring of Wani who are in the possession of other members of the Nakao line.
Sealed: Wani's sealed form appears much like other zanpakutou in structure, a curved, traditionally-forged blade, though much shorter in length, closer to a wakizashi than a katana. The blade is roughly 30 centimeters long but has a serrated edge with many wicked teeth. The hilt is a muted green-grey in color, fitting Wani's scales. At the bottom is one of Wani's many red symbols. It is said that it is the wielder's true name in the lost language of the Great Mother Lizard.
