No one thought that the virus would spread so quickly. Just two weeks ago the world had been fine, but then the tweekers found a new ingredient to put inside their drug. The ingredient gave them a permanent high; it also gave them an uncontrollable urge to bite. Soon enough, tweekers started biting and infecting everyone. Too bad that the infection doesn’t hit the brain until a week. Suddenly, after a week of this new discovered drug, people lost their minds and became zombies. Biting everything they could.
The world was now just this heap of bodies and zombies. Was anyone sane? Had the tweekers infected everyone?
A tall man walked from the rising sun, a sword strapped onto his back. His eyes were red and bags caressed the skin beneath his eyes. He gave a heavy sigh and put his hands on his hips, leaning back, and several pops erupting from his back. He then slipped a walkie from his hip and raised it up to his pale, dry lips.
“Hey, see anything up a head?” He spoke into the walkie.
There was no response. He stared down at the walkie, “Bro, see anything?” He spoke again. No response. His heart sank and he hit the button again. “Mal, answer!” He yelled into the walkie.
Suddenly, there was a pop and static from his walkie. “Oh, I’m sorry. Were you done speaking? I didn’t realize this. Over.” The voice said.
“You’re an ass. Over.” The tired man growled into the old walkie.
“I know.” The voice responded. “There are some cars about a mile ahead. I’m dismounting and seeing if I can find any tweekers. I’ll keep you updated. Over.”
“Be careful, Mal. See if you can start any of the cars. Over.”
“Will do. Over and out.”
The man groaned and sat on the side of the road. He took a rag off his sword and patted his head with it. He stared at the sun which was now blaring on his back yet, it was still rising. He looked around a little and leaned back, letting his head rest against the rock behind him. A little rest was needed. He doubted a tweeker would pop out out of nowhere.
“Taisho! Taisho! You need to get over here, quick! Hurry!” The pop and static hadn’t even woken up the sleeping giant but the voice of his brother in distress sent his body into a fight or flight mode and without being fully awake his feet took off in the direction he had last seen his brother.
Ten minutes later, he saw his brother, grinning from ear to ear with his hands on his hip. “What’s…” Inhale. “Going…” Where the hell was the oxygen? “On?!”
“This…” His brother grabbed the back of a semi truck’s load and threw it open.
“Mal, you made me run here for…” He was stopped, speechless as Mal pushed a car out from the shadows of the car. He laid out the ramps and continued to push it down the ramps.
“Sexy, right?” Mal chuckled.
“1969…Camaro…” He was breathless.
His hand traced over the dust that had collected on the metallic purple paint. He walked along the side of the car, never taking his hand off of its brand new paint job.
“Perhaps we could get to Frox sooner if both of us have a vehicle.” Mal spoke up, throwing Taisho out of his daze.
“We need to stay in the mile rule though.” Taisho spoke up, opening the driver’s door.
“You kidding, with how high this baby can get her speed…we’ll be side by side.” Mal chuckled and tapped the hood of the car.
Taisho sat in the seat and surprisingly enough, the key was dangling from the rearview mirror. He carefully slid the key in and turned it. At first the car sputtered and spit.
“Come on, baby.” He mumbled and tried again, pressing lightly against the gas.
She roared to life, purring softly and bringing a smile to Taisho’s lips that he hadn’t felt in a while. He groaned and quickly covered his mouth.
“We really gotta get you some chapstick.” Mal muttered and chuckled, shutting the door and patting it.
Taisho looked up and wiped the blood from his lips before putting the car in drive and maneuvering it around the other cars, meeting up with Mal in front of his motorcycle. A Honda shadow. Cherry red. Mal’s dream had come true when they raided a motorcycle shop.
Mal hoped on his bike and it revved to life and he grinned back as his brother. Both men grabbed their walkies, Taisho’s eagerness earning him the button first. “Race you to the next town?” Taisho dared.
“You’re on!”
And with that, the two engines roared and the tires screamed along the ground. The race commenced.
