The past few days we've been having some games of Cards Against Humanity. If you see someone announce it in the box and wonder what we are talking about, then read on. I should say though, this game can be rather adult.
First of all, to actually join go to pyz.socialgamer.net/game.jsp type in a display name and you will see a list of games. The person who announced the game on the box will probably tell you whose game to join, but if they didn't, look for a game with names which sound like us AKers. The game will probably also be password protected. Unless stated otherwise, the password is toecheese. Just join, say "Hi" to people in the (stupidly small) chatbox there and wait for the game to begin!
How to play
The game is really simple and you'll probably pick it up really fast.
You will have a hand of 10 white cards. Each of these cards will have a word or sentence on them, such as "being on fire" or "a tiny horse" along with others which I shall not repeat here.
There will be a black card as well. The black card will have a question on it such as "What ended my last relationship?" or a sentence with a blank on it such as "But before I kill you, Mr Bond, I must show you _______." Again, along with other ruder cards.
All you have to do is pick the white card you think best fits the black card. After everyone has chosen their white cards for that round, that round's 'card czar' picks whichever card they think fits best. Whoever they pick gets a point. A new black card is drawn, the next player becomes card czar and everyone gets more white cards until they have 10 again.
Note: Some black cards have 'pick 2' or 'pick 3' on them, such as "For my next trick, I will pull ________ out of ________". In these cases you need to play two or three white cards.
The Card Czar
Players take turns being the Card Czar. If you are Card Czar that round then you don't play any white cards this round. You pick whichever white card or set of white cards fit the black card the best. Whatever is the 'best fit' is purely subjective and completely up to you. Pick whatever set you want. Whoever you pick gets a point, then the next player becomes Czar for a round.
Winning The Game
The first player to reach the score limit (as decided by the host at the start of the game) wins! By default the score limit is 8, but it can be anywhere from 4 to 69.
Hosting The Game
Most of this should be self explanatory.
At the top of the screen should be a "create game" button. When you create the game, your first order of business should be to put in the password, before random people start joining. Just type it in the "Game Password" box and then the password will be set.
The next order of business is to set the player limit. I would suggest putting this at the maximum of 20. This allows as many people as who want to join to be able to join, and lets other people join mid-game. Since it is a private game, then you shouldn't need to worry about restricting the amount of slots available.
You also have to select which decks you want to use. Pick as many or as few as you want, but you have to pick at least one of the five in the "Select at least one of:" section. I won't tell you which sets to pick, but the box will probably have their own preferences, and if there is ever consensus on which decks we like to use the most, then I'll put them here.
You'll also need to set the score limit. Just remember that with more people the less chance any person has of getting a point, so you'll probably want to lower it if you have lots of players.
I'd recommend leaving the "use idle timer" box checked.
Once everyone is ready, hit the "start game" button. Just remember that you'll need at least 3 players to start.
Being host doesn't give you any sort of "moderation powers" however. You can't kick players or anything of the sort.
Misc.
If the idle timer is being used, then you only have a certain amount of time to pick a card, though this time is pretty generous. I haven't tested it, but I think that it only counts time without input. If you take too long then you will be skipped. If you miss two rounds in a game (I think consecutive rounds, but again, haven't tested) then you will be booted from the game. Annoyingly this also finishes the game for some reason. This doesn't occur if you just choose "leave game" though.
You can see a list of all the cards at pyz.socialgamer.net/viewcards.jsp
I'd recommend playing in fullscreen mode. This, for me at least, expands the chat box from 2 lines to 8.
In the bottom left is the scoreboard. This shows how many points each player has, who still has to play a card as well as who the card czar is.
Whilst the first card czar is chosen at random, after that it will follow the order shown on the scoreboard.
Whilst the game is password protected, feel free to invite friends to the game! The more the merrier!
And a tip. Remember the card czar is the one who is judging who has given the best response. Try to appeal to their tastes. Some people like offensive combinations, others like using real world names. I, for example, have a more subtle, subdued British sense of humour. Which caused me to not get many points for a while T_T.
Finally, what happens in game stays in game.
