A short distance away from the Konno residence lay a brook. When she was younger, her and Kata used to play in it on hot summer days, allowing the coolness of the waters to quench the heat of the day. When Kata was a bit older they moved further downstream, where there was a pond, which itself wasn't of great size, but was of sufficient depth to swim in, unlike the river which only came halfway up her lower leg.
Of course, the weather at this time of year was too cold for playing in water. No, Yumi's interest was invested in a series of stones jutting above the height of the chilly waters. Though they were rounded, a person of reasonable athleticism could use one as a stepping-stone across the river.
"Hyyup-da."
With a quick leap, Yumi placed the sole of her shoe upon the rock and leapt across to the opposite side of the stream. She was glad. Her leg muscles were growing stronger again, and this was evidence of that. She turned and ran again, this time at a different rock.
"Hyuurk!"
Again, a fine hop, and another fine landing. She had this. Just one more.
"Hyahhh!"
"Ok, time to move on to the next step"
The young Shinigami strolled a little down stream and gazed her eyes back up the brook's flow. As she stared at the rocks, a number of ghosts appeared before her eyes, matching her own appearance, rebounding off the rocks, showing her the path she would take, for it was simple to make a double-hop across the river. It would be much harder to leap from stone to stone up stream. She knew it was possible, she had done it herself. But this was before her injury, and after many attempts, many falls in the river, and many clips around the ear from Yasunari after she came home in soaked clothes.
"I can do this. I know I can."
Yumi took a deep breath and reached up, snapping her goggles into place. She leant from side to side, giving her legs a final stretch, ready for the trial to follow. And then she set off.
"Hyahh!"
She made the first leap successfully, but now was the hardest part, altering her course enough so she could run in line with the brook. Not like the rest of the stones were anywhere near something resembling a perfect alignment.
"Harumpf!"
She made it to the second rock. The rest would be comparatively easy.
"Hup, hup, hup, h-yaaaahhhhhh!"
Her foot hit a rock wrong, and the imaginary lines guiding her path contorted madly, then disappeared into nothingness as Yumi landed with a splash in the cold waters.
"Brrrrrr."
The little girl shook at the sudden sensation at the invasion of the icy waters to her clothes and her skin, a fitting punishment for her failure.
"I guess I'm not quite there yet."
Frozen to her core, Yumi rose from the river, shaking some of the excess drips from her togs, before turning and treading the few feet she had travelled, back to her starting position, ready to try again. And again. And again.
