Simple enough. To increase one's understanding of world events I'd appreciate it if people would post what is happening in their part of the world, along with where this is happening, of course That being said, if you come across an interesting story from another part of the world, don't hesitate to post it. And though I would hope we can avoid flame wars by keeping our delivery of the news fairly neutral, and that most of the reports will be so far away that feelings are fairly mild. Even so, I should put up a warning that this thread may contain potentially controversial topics.

United Kingdom
Our Princess Katherine is pregnant, and has been admitted to hospital due to illness (from news reports it appears she's just fine, thankfully). A few days ago a couple of Australian DJs prank called the hospital, pretending to be the Royal Family. Amazingly they got through to a nurse who gave them info on her condition.
The nurse who answered the call (not the one who gave the info) was found dead today, apparently suicide.

Northern Ireland
I'm going to assume you have a rough idea of NI's political situation. I can provide further explanation on request.
On Monday Belfast City Council voted to stop flying the Union Flag from City hall all year round, instead only flying it on certain 'designated days'. There have been protests, some violent, across the province. This is during the height of the Christmas shopping season. (Bear in mind we don't have Thanksgiving or Black Friday here)
There have been attacks against offices of the Alliance party, which claims to be neutral on the Unionist/Republican issue, who were king maker in this vote.
Politicians across the political spectrum have spoken against the violence, including Hillary Clinton, who was here on a visit arranged before the vote.

Justin Trudeau, Liberal Party leader hopeful, continues to alienate Alberta and flip-flop back and forth on key issues.
Teachers across Ontario prepare to strike in opposition of bill 115, the "Putting Students First" bill. It takes away their right to negotiate union deals, wage increases, etc. Takes away the accumulation of unused sick days and a few other things that the teachers aren't happy about.
In world news, last I checked, Syria is still messed right up and nobody's doing anything to help.

North Korea has confirmed the existence of unicorns - one key piece of irrefutable evidence being the words 'Unicorn Lair' carved onto a stone before a cave a few miles away from Pyongyang - thus justifying ancient North Korean texts telling of the first King/Emperor/Whoever and the noble Unicorn upon which he rode, therefor justifying North Korea's maintenance of Kings/Emperors, as this evidence totally proves the mythological fact that God proclaimed their first King/Emperor the true ruler of the lands.

A four month old puppy was found partly skinned in southwest Dallas a couple of weeks ago. "The dog, named Isabella, is under the care of DFW Rescue Me, the same group that cared for Justice, the puppy that was burned in a parking lot in Pleasant Grove, until its death."
"The portion is a rectangular swath that stretches from shoulder to shoulder and extends from the base of her neck to her tail. It's possible the dog could have gotten caught under a fence or attacked by a coyote. It's also possible it was tortured by a human."
"Earlier in the week, Dallas County announced it wants to establish a dedicated unit for investigating animal abuse. Should that occur, it would be the second in the state. If this investigation finds the dog was tortured at the hands of a person, the unit would investigate cases just like this."
Naegleria Fowleri (a.k.a brain eating amoeba ) had been found responsible for a young boy's death a couple of years ago. Anyways, his family has established an awareness organization called KyleCares to try and get the word out about this amoeba as it has a 98% fatality rate. This thing occurs in warm bodies of water, so the family of the boy is trying to get the state health department to launch a campaign against the amoeba so that meteorologists in warm states report lake temperatures in their forecasts during warm months for the deaths from the amoeba to be added to the official list of "reportable diseases," like whooping cough and measles.
Basically, while infections are rare, invest in nose plugs or avoid warm bodies of water.

OR
Man gets stabbed in the face outside of a bar early Saturday Morning after dragging a barfight outside. He is expected to live, so hopefully he'll be able to tell the police who stabbed him.
Because the police don't know, as they're spread too thin as it is.
But some of them recently took a class in emergency first aid for animals - both their working dogs and those they find on calls; those who don't know Portland very well would be pleased to learn that we love our pets more than some people, and that we go to great lengths to save them.

Winter has struck yet again:
Massive pileup outside of my place of employment due to black ice, steep hills, and the basic laws of physics.
As of now, I have no news (then again, I had no idea about clackamas until jeff asked me how far from it I was) as to how many vehicles were involved (I am currently approximating it at 8 but I could only hear and not see) and if anyone has been injured.

I add in some Slavic Flavor to the news here, though I'm not sure how fitting they'll be << >>
Six Polish Women are facing charges of encouraging younger Polish women to prostitution, as well as organizing meetings with their clients (usually abroad, in luxurious hotel's and the like) and of course took profit from it as well. They were seeking out girls via social networking and model agencies. Apparently none of the girls were forced to the act, they knew what they were getting into, and prosecution has testimonies of two girls who turned down the offer with no further consequences. One of the suspected women has earned no less then 100 thousand zloty's from the ordeal.
In other news, there is an ongoing debate about the amount of fotoradars (that's what their call here. Basically video cameras that take photos of you on roads if you go past the limit so the cops know where to send the bill). Politics are planing a huge increase of them all over the country, and one was quoted to say they are expecting over a billion zlotych profit from the bill's. People are not amused by these attempts of milking them dry

Car just blew up two houses down from my house. Wasn't a new car or anything but it was expensive and niiiice. The guy had left his house to get gas for work and when he was heading back up our hill (one road street, one exit, one entrance) the car started spitting and sputtering then when the hill leveled out again the car died then the passenger side of the hood blew up going all the way to the driver's side. Luckily the guy had put his car in park and opened the car to see why it had stopped when it blew so he immediately jumped in a near by ditch; just in time to escape the blast from the passenger seat exploding also. Then the car was spitting out flames like a torch, caught my neighbor's bush on fire and then the passenger tire over heated and blew up.
Luckily the man wasn't hurt and the Volunteer Firefighters were able to make in time for the bush to not get to the house. They finally got the car's fire put out. Keep in mind this is about an hour after the car finally turned off. The car should have been chilled down enough not to explode again so the firefighters reached in to take the battery out. They claimed the battery was so hot they could hardly stand the heat because they could feel it so strongly through their gloves. They started trying to cool down the battery, thinking that was what had caused the explosion but then when they tow truck was raising the car up it started smoking really bad, they put it back on the ground and hosed it down and tried to find where the smoke was coming from but couldn't find it. They repeated this a few times even the tow truck driver came out to check the car. They backed away from the car when the smoke got really heavy and they began to hose it off again. There was a loud pop, sounded like a tiny explosion and then it stopped smoking.
Poor guy just got new tires D:

It started snowing rather heavily around here. While it seems somewhat obvious for the part of the year, the city council was caught quite of guard by the fact, so now it turns out there is not enough funds in the budget for desnowing the roads and stuff

UK
Liberal Democrat MP and Ex Cabinet Minister Chris Huhne has pleaded guilty to charges of perverting the course of justice.
The charges relate to an incident in 2003 where his car was caught speeding. At the time it was claimed that his then-wife, Vasiliki Pryce was driving at the time. After they were divorced in 2011, Ms Pryce alleged that her husband had made her take the penalty for the incident. The allegations led Mr Huhne to resign his cabinet position.
Ms Pryce is also charged with perverting the course of justice for the same incident. She is maintaining her plea of not guilty, citing marital coercion.

NI, UK
In recent days there has been increased discussion on whether a border poll should be taken in Northern Ireland. In response to this, BBC NI conducted their own informal poll.
The results were enlightening.
Overall, 65% of people said they would vote in favour of remaining in the UK. 17% were for a united Ireland. If you remove those that said that they would not vote or didn't know who they would vote for, it becomes 79/21.
Among Catholics, a group which is expected to be more in favour of having a united Ireland, the figures were still 38/35.
Even among Sinn Fein voters, a party which campaigns heavily for a united Ireland, 23% said that they would vote to remain part of the UK

This ties in with Kurai's issue and the announcement I posted yesterday. Apparently the malware issue is spread out much more than initially thought, even popping up in youtube. It seems mainly to happen to chrome users, though it may occur to others. I found an article here while perusing the proboards support forum, though there may be better articles about the current situation elsewhere. [link]
