Appearance
Physical Statistics 174 cm in height, 62 kilos in weight;
Constitution Toned but not pronounced musculature, lean, flexible, acrobatic, lissom;
AestheticsViolet eyes, white-blonde locks, carmine eyeliner tattooed on full lower lids and outside half of uppers, soft and full lips, three piercings on right ear while four on the left, clean;
Poise Elegant, regal, languid, fluid;
Attire (On) Loose-fitting shihakushou for additional comfort, zanpakutou either on hip or across back, jewelry (mother's pendent, pair of rings (LD3, RD1), hoops in top two piercings on right ear, top three on left, long hanging on both lobes);
Attire (Off) Loose or flowing garments to both accentuate her form and keep her zanpakutou hidden from sight, occasional bare midriff, jewelry (mother's pendent, pair of rings (LD3, RD1), hoops in top two piercings on right ear, top three on left, long hanging on both lobes);
The trademark white-blonde hair of the Tanaka clan cascades halfway down her back in soft waves, while the few loose tendrils that escaped the small braids around her crown curl softly around her gentle, pale face. Like Malik, her eyebrows are a darker color, though they are a darker brown as opposed to his black. She wears little to no paint on her face, preferring the carmine ink permanently attached around her eyelids. Her full lips are naturally a darker pink, and rarely stray from the accustomed somber line. When her hair is not covering her ears, which is often as she continually tucks the wayward strands behind them, the presence of her uneven ear ornaments is shown.
Of the two Tanaka children, Mai appears to be the elder, even though she is seven hundred years Chie's junior. Very willowy by nature, Mai is 5'8.5" with a weight ranging between 135 to 145 pounds, depending on the season. Her body is slender and athletic, the faint musculature allowing her full usage of her natural flexibility. Her poise lays promise to a fluid, graceful gait, and her posture imposes a certain degree of confidence.
Her shihakushou is a tad too large to provide a loose, comfortable fitting when working amongst the wounded and ill. Her zanpakutou rests comfortably either on her hip, or if things are hectic, slung across her back. Within her uniform are several squares of white cloth, which Mai uses to wipe her hands clean after any sort of soiling.
She prefers silver jewelry, as noted by the multiple piercings in her ears, the pendant on her neck, the bangles on her wrist, and the rings on her fingers. Most of these are gifts from her father in an attempt to cheer her up, although the pendant is her mother's. While she may forgo the rings and bangles, she never removes the silver chain with the wooden carving of the sun.
When not on active duty, her choice in garment is questionable at best; according to her father, it is much too revealing and "would give boys the wrong impression." Typical attire consists tight-fitting garments over the curvature of her breast beneath loose, flowing fabrics that reveal her midriff and lengthy leg. Her arms are often covered, though her shoulders are bare, and gloves are a common accessory.
Personality
Intimate Proud, gentle, melancholy, naive, devious (ie, Malik) on rare occasion;
Professional Kind, polite, respectful, supportive yet firm, very clean, empathic, driven, stoic;
Acquaintance Vain, prickly, verbally reactive (ie, snappy), naive, clean, apathetic, headstrong;
Unique Qualifiers Adores rain, enjoys healing despite the presence of bodily fluids (ie, vomitus, saliva, mucous), terrified of the sight of her own blood
There are three distinct sides to Mai, each one operating on a different frequency than the others. To those closest to her, Mai is a proud, sad creature, gentle by nature, and fairly naive when it comes to the world. Her father considers her slightly defiant, though he will admit she has become much more amicable and relaxed since finding a calling (no matter how naive it is). She is somewhat vain, believing that she has a reputation to maintain, especially as she is the SouTaichou's daughter. But that doesn't stop her from playing any number of pranks on her father; he clearly deserves them.
To those she works with, Mai is a respectful girl with a wonderful bedside manner. She is driven in her duty, very neat and orderly, and easily can endure the hardest of scenarios despite her unfortunate intolerance of vomit, saliva, and snot on her person; more often than not, she has several small squares of cloth squirreled away to combat the unfortunate disasters of working in the medical field. The control she has over her emotions is superb, no doubt made all the easier by all her writing. Oddly enough, the only thing to make her visibly squeamish is her own blood - the blood of her patients, the sound of crunching bones, the sight of innards or missing limbs do not bother her.
To those who do not know her, she is somewhat snobbish in demeanor, responding with short, terse sentences, a trait she inherited from her father. She is stubborn, unrelenting and uncaring of anothers emotions. Naturally, this perception is due to her severe control over her emotions and lack of social experiences, nuances, and customs. She is quick to warm, however, when not wary or unsettled.
Through the spectrum, there are things that remain constant. Her need for order and physical cleanliness are at the top of the list, while her naivety and supposed apathy are a close second. She generally wishes to help all those in pain and help ease their suffering, firmly believing that no one should have to endure such things alone.
As an avid poet, she enjoys all that life and nature has to offer; her favorite things include rainfalls, singing birds, and unrequited love. Though she would never reveal such romantic things to anyone, as she has a reputation to maintain. And frankly, Malik would disapprove of any such notion.
History
Timeline
Her father, Malik, encouraged her to find something slightly more productive to do, both to distract her from her thoughts and to give her something to look forward toat the start of each day. She declined, and started the journey to find herself in her physical maturity. She pierced her ears with her new-found love of silver, bedecked herself in her deceased mother's jewelry, had her favorite color tattooed along her eyelids, and experimented with odd choices of clothing.
On the day she threatened to run away into the Rukongai, Malik forcibly dragged her toward the darkest districts. He explained to her that if she thought she had it so bad, then these people were what? Subjected to hollow attacks, unprotected, uncared for. Would this suit her? Her careful poise and irritated demeanor shattered and she broke down, sobbing into her hands, and later into her father's arms. After that day, she dedicated herself to the Gotei. She joined the second division, throwing herself into her studies to better reach her goal of changing the world.
Fifty years into her career, Mai had her first experience in a battle setting. It was a markedly unpleasant experience, the scene of her father falling repeating itself over and over in her dreams, even though she saved him from the infection that threatened to take him and the rest of the Rukongai. The situation did bring her to the attention of Hitoshi Harupia, the Taichou of her Division, and with it the pangs of mild infatuation; his constant praise and confidence in her skills, along with a personal interest in her growth, had not only secured her position within the Division as a Twentieth Seat, but had won the way her heart as well.

Spirit
A somber-looking man with a rather grim, pained expression on his face and buried within his green eyes. He has greasy, shoulder length black hair that curls slightly upward at the back of his head, as though it couldn't tolerate another pained sweep of his long, slender hands. Though he is rather skeletal and gaunt, he rises a good six inches over Mai's already considerable (feminine) height. He is clad in a dark green tunic and black leather pants; with the heavy flowing cape attached to his long, green leather cloak, embroidered with intricate gold designs along the edges and up the high collar, he looks very much the nobleman from another era. He has a gentle smile that does not quite reach his eyes.
He is very quiet, preferring to be alone with his thoughts over any sort of interaction. An observer, he is very keen and knowledgeable about many things and will often use this to his advantage. He is also fairly intelligent, which when coupled with his tendency to manipulate, poses a rather tense situation, especially when the situation is not going according to his plans. When a situation presents itself to be well out of his control, he can become excessively volatile and very physical.
Despite his selfish nature, he does genuinely appear to care for Mai and her wellbeing. Even if they are rude to one another and practice a violent physical relationship, they do work well together. Though they still wouldn't mind silencing the other for a brief period of peace.
Inner World
A fantastical, celestial world, bathed in the twinkling lights of galaxies unknown; a pathway, woven of rainbow light, weaves to and fro to offer the most spectacular of views from any location. Dominating the starscape is a gaseous giant, hued in reds, oranges, and yellows all bleeding into delicious swirls; thick rings of shattered moons and broken dreams spin around the beast, inspiring awe in even the most stoic of individuals, Shitasanzun.
Behind the planet are swirling nebulas of blues, pinks, and greens, blended in soft clouds and harsh angles. Purple streaks race across the horizon, chasing unknown suns. A gentle melody twinkles in the flickering stars, culminating in a glorious crescendo of an eternal supernova.
Sealed
A blade of arm's length housed in a dark green sheathe with a silk cord of braided green, black and gold wrapped along its length. The scimitar-influenced hilt, wrapped with alternating strips of green and black leather, curves back by an extra hand and a half opposite the curve of the blade, giving it the overall appearance of an unfurled serpent. Popping with awkward elegance, the gold guard bespeaks of some forgotten royalty--or a misguided snowflake.
Shikai
“Ridden of glory by fallen grace, we will find our place; sweet fable of life, empty threats to which we fly; by the blue of the moon, herald of our doom; flee, lie, and survive, Shitasanzun!”
The blade releases itself into a modified naginata bearing a long, golden shaft with a wicked-curved blade resembling a serpent’s mouth. The blade has three separate edges: the topmost and bottommost curve toward each other as though opposing fangs poised for an attack, likewise ending in a sharp point, with the cutting edges facing outward; the bottom blade is roughly half the length of the top, its curve being much sharper to generate this effect. The center blade has a small fork in the very tip, perpendicular to the top and bottom blades, to catch an oncoming blade and deflect it, should aim and timing prove true. All three blades are melded together at the end and are securely attached within the shaft.
The overall length of the weapon's shaft is carved with shallow, wide grooves to provide additional grip, and should the inevitable occur, drain blood quickly and efficiently. The slight serpentine shape and thick end allow for physical use as well, should Mai have the need to conserve her energy. When the weapon is held vertical, the blade extends two and a half hands over the top of her head, with the remaining two inches coming down to the top of her ear, meaning that the total length of the blade is 12 inches from tang to tip and bringing the total length of the weapon to six and a half feet, one half inch.
Attack
When actively engaged, a ball of reiatsu forms in the mouth of the serpent and ejects from between the two blades along the forked tongue; size and force are equal to that of a Soukatsui.

History
Timeline
1800 (spring) - Born to Malik and Chiyoko; aged 0 yearsHer first memory is of being out in the garden with her mother, planting roses and watching them grow. Her second memory is of her mother's death and the subsequent inability to cope at the devastating loss. She ignored her father, barely responded to her sister, and shut herself out. As she grew older, she was unable to control her emotions; she would cry at the drop of a hat, subject her family to irrational bouts of rage. There was no control for many years, despite any and all attempts from all parties. Eventually, she made efforts with poetry and other forms of prose, and with the help of her sister, Chie, started to heal.
1803 - 1806 - Gardening with Mother; aged 3-6 years
1806 - Mother's Death; aged 6 years.
1806 to 1945 - Unable to come to terms with mother's death. Developed emotional inconsistency and mental acuity. Began writing; aged 6-139 years
1945 (spring) - Encouraged to find something more productive to work out issues with by father. Declined, embarked on self-discovery quest instead; aged 139 years
1950 (winter) - Unwillingly dragged into the Rukongai after declaring intent to run away; appalled, made decision to help improve conditions and/or relations instead; aged 150 years
1951 (spring) - Joined Gotei, Second Division. Met Hitoshi Harupia (official/professional capacity); aged 151 years
1951 - 2000 - Training, maturing, making friends; aged 151-200 years
2000 (autumn) - First real taste of battle, with unknown enemy; aged 200 years
